ROUND THE WORLD FOR LEXINGTON, Kentucky Derby Favorite to Start in Phoenix Hotel Handicap on Opening Day. Lexirrgton. Ky., April 22. With the opening of the Kentucky Association spring meeting only six days away, trainers at the local course could not wait longer for improved weather and track conditions, and in a chilly atmosphere this morning scores of horses were churning mud, all galloping around the "dogs." As might be expected under the circumstances there were few moves that appeared, out of the ordinary. There was, however, one sparkling performance. Ruth Jackson, a two-year-old half-sister to Bat Masterson, worked a half mile in 51, fairly revelling in the going. This filly is bv Cesarlon Vanessa, is in the string of C. E. Patterson and was twice placed at Tampa. Joe Knight, one of the choices for the Breeders Futurity, worked three-eighths in 40, impressively. Martin Doyles Kentucky Derby candidate, St. Aloysius, went three-quarters in 1:25. Joe .Morris, It. II. Andersons Camden Handicap candidate, worked a mile in 1:54. These were the best moves at the distances. Bound the World will race here. W. G. Yanke called up Superintendent Boss from Louisville this morning and told him to prepare three stalls for him, saying that he will arrive Tuesday with Round the World and two others to join ten horses belonging to Col. W. E. Applegate in the stable of Charles T. Patterson. He further said that Round the World will fill her engagement in the Phoenix Hotel Handicap on the opening day. The Carman string, in three cars, left New York this morning. Two cars are due here at noon Sunday. The other car will go to Louisville. Mr. Carman has no eligible for the Breeders Futurity and trainer Jack Keone lias asked for jockey Archibalds services for one of the Camden eligiblos. E. C. Cowdins three-year-old Watercress filly, Swannauoa. has arrived from New York and is in T. C. McDowells stable. She will bo pointed for the Latonia Derby. Jockey Carl Gauz arrived today. His contract with Lew .Marion, former trainer of the St. James Stable, lias expired and lie will ride here as a free lance. Secretary Shelley left today for Louisville to see horsemen at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park tomorrow to list up horses that are coining from the Falls City next week.. There will be a special horse train out of Louisville Tuesday. Tom Brown, who lias been schooling two-year-olds here, reports that the youngsters have shown unusual aptness at the barrier. A number of real good juveniles will show up at the meeting. Edward Corrigan will arrive from Florida Tuesday with four horses. Col. Jack Chinn reports a sister to A. J. Small among the foals at Leonatus Farm. Eliza Belle dam of Darknight has a bav colt by Meelick at the St. James Stud. Secretary Bidwell of the Kentucky State Racing Commission will be at the track every morning next week to receive applications from trainers and jockeys for licenses. The commission will meet next Saturday morning to grant licenses. An indictment charging Thomas F. Dolan with the murder of Alderman Patrick Mooiiey was returned by the grand jury this morning. Dolan has asked E. R. Bradley for assistance in his trouble.
