Toronto. Onl.. May IS. — Everything is in readiness for the opening of the spring meeting of the Ontario Jockey Club on Saturday. It will mark the Introduction of the mutuel system of betting in Canada. The lacing at Woodbine this spring will be high class. The presence of some of the best thorough areas on this continent ami many of the star riders assure this. Todays arrivals included the stable* of Thomas Clyde. Gwyn Tompkins and August Belmont. The big establishment of S. C. Hildreth. which includes the groat racers Pits Herbert, King James. Zeus. Novelty, Firestone. Montgomery and Bsae Queen, is due in the morning. They are com ing in three express cars. Mr. Belmonts thorough breds wen- unloaded in excellent condition this after noon and Watervale. the winner of the Preakm !SB Handicap at Pimllco Wednesday, was as frisky as a two year obi when he got off the cars. The outlook is for the greatest meeting ever held at Wood bine. The special train from Baltimore which rcach-d Toronto at 11:30 this morning was made up of eight sleepers. Lavetie, the crack racer in Mrs. Livingstons stable, has la-en taken down with a severe attack of pneumonia since his arrival here and little hope is entertained of his recovery. Capt. P. M. Walker, who lelf Baltimore last night, is bringing the useful lilly Fagle Bird along with him. She was* turned over to Captain Walker by her owner. Charles Odell, to be raced on the Canadian circuit tracks. Jockey C. H. Shilling, who is due here in the morning, will have the mount on Powdcrmau in the Kings Plate. This is the colt with which the Valley Farm Stable hopes to win the big race. It is said that an effort will ho made to get jockey Eddie Hasan to ride St. Bass, the prospective favorite. Jockey 11. McCarthy is slated to ride the colt, however, an 1 has been galloping him all spring. Olainhala and Naushnn. in the K. T. Wilson string, are among the latest arrivals at Woodbine. The horses of A. Taney, B. McLennan. G. K. Tompkins. W. A. Burttschell. H. Penny. P. M. Walker, Quiucy Stable. H. L. Higginson. A. Simons and William Walker are other late additions to the Woodbine colony. The track was a bit muddy today, but fast enough for horses to run half miles during the morning hours in -ID seconds and in IS during the afternoon. — — ,,.
