FREE LANCE LOSES PURSE FINISHES FIRST IN RACE AT CHURCHILL DOWNS, BUT IS DISQUALIFIED. Batwa. Horse Repeatedly Interfered with. Benefits by Ruling and Jockey E. Martin Is Suspended as a Consequence — Follie Levys Stake. Louisville. Ky.. May IS. — Follie Levy, running irk the colors of former jockey George Odom, won the Colonel Stakes, the feature of todays card at Churchill Downs and worth ,170 net to the winner. The speedy daughter of Golden Maxim and Ridicule was held in high esteem by the speculators and she occasioned them -onsiderable concern during the early part of the race on account of her failure to show her .11111-10111111 early speed. She settled well in her stride after going three-eighths, however, anil eanie with a rush that carried her past Winning Widow, the early pacemaker, to win witli plenty in reserve. Winning Widow held the others safe for Second money and was a good margin in advance of Rocky OBrien, the third horse, at the end. An-gelus. from a slow beginning, made up ground and at a longer distance would have been a keen factor. There was a good bit of crowding in the race, with Golden Kgg the chief sufferer. Aside from the stake race, the main incident of the days sport developed with the running of the cecond race, and was caused by the conduct of jockey K. Martin on G. J. Longs Free Lance. Mai-tin, while at the post, allowed the eolt to unseat him and the latter galloped away three quarters before lie was caught. In the running he showed the most sjMed a id. aided by interference that followed Martins action in Steering him across the track from an outside position, he was able to go into a long lead. In the stretch he was challenged by Batwa and thu latter was in a fair way to pass the Long juvenile when Martin began carrying Batwa wide, forcing A. Thomas to take back and try to get through on the inside. Martin then deliberately crossed over and sharply cut P.atwa off. Free Lance then went over lo win handily from Batwa. with Judge Sale in third place. The claim of foul lodged by A. Thomas was recognized and Free Lance was set back to last dace. Batwa being declared the winner, with Judge Sale second anil B. Airy third. Martin was sus-I ended for ten days by the stewards for his foul riding tactics. Round the World regained some of her lost prestige by an impressive victory in the seven furlongs handicap in which she conceded weight to all the other starters. Despite her jaded appearance, the majority held her in favor and she made good in game fashion. Colston might have given her a stronger argument but for suffering much interference, which also served to keep him out of second place. Clover Hughes lasting to beat him a nose for thai position. The limit number of starters engaged in the opener, which furnished a victory for Kthelda. the favorite, with Kyo White in second place. The latter was making his first start in a long time and made a creditable showing. Luke Le Blonds American Girl was benefited by a. clear course and a fast start in the fifth race, which aided her to victory over Alamitos and Terrible Dan. The last-named pair would probably have had tho finish between them but for interference which they met. The closing purse went to Taboo, which also enjoyed a clear course throughout. Fort Johnson and Descomnets fought it out for second place honors finishing in the order named. Descomnets was probably lKst, but suffered interference at critical periods of the running. The proposed special race designed to bring Meridian and Governor Gray together is still hanging tire, due to the failure of it. I. Carman to announce hH consent to starting Meridian. John 1. Schorr is evincing- a disposition t" send Star Charter to the post in the race, but is asking weight concessioiH from the others, which if is unlikely they will allow. The Schorrs are firmly of the belief 1 hat Star Charter has the Latonia Derby at his mercy. Jockey C. Archibald ws suspended for three days by the starter for disobedience at the post. .lame- Blute is due to arrive tomorrow with his big string of racers from Baltimore. Jockey B. Taplin left tonight for Toronto, where lie gees to ride Mi-s Martimas in the Kings Plate, to be run at Woodbine on the opening day. Jockey M. htcGee is considering au offer to ride in Germany.
