CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE LATONIA DERBY 4 + The first I.atonia Derby was run in 1SS:; and was won by a real race horse. It was then called the Hindoo Stakes and was run ,-.s such for the first four years of its existence. Then the change to the present name of the event was made. The tirst winner. Leouatua, was a son of LoogfeBow that started iu ten races as a three-year-old and won theaa all. He was an aristocrat and ran in nothing but stake races, lieing such an invincible that in his last four or tive races that year he was barred iu the betting. He won in succession the Blue Ribbon Stakes at Lexaagtonj Kentucky Derby. Tobacco Stakes and Woodbitrn Stakes at I ouisville: Hindoo Stakes. Ripple Stakes and Hiniyar Stakes at I.atonia. and the Dearborn Stakes. Green Slakes and Illinois Derby at the West Side track. Chicago. Leonattis is not the only really great racer in the I.atonia Derby list. Beraaa, I.os Angeles, Kingman, llalma. Pen Brush, Ornament, Lieutenant Gibson. Hernando, Sir Hnon and Olambala were all truly high class horses and such others as Libretto. Pill Letcher, Newton. Laauaroue, Han dOr and Prince McClurg were much above the average. One creditable feature of tin race is that it has always beea kept at the proper Derby distance of a mile and a. half.
