DERBY CANDIDATES AT WORK. Governor Gray. White Wool and Colston Seen in Satisfactory Trials at Latonia. Cincinnati. O.. June 8. — Governor Gray. Colston and White Wool, three candidates for the Latnaia Derby that wen- recently* transferred from Louis ville. were given workouts at Latonia yesterday. The course was muddy early in the morning, but energetic work by the track superintendent restored it to good condition by afternoon, when the trials took place. White Wool was the hist to appear for his try-out. He was sent one mile and a quartet in a little better than 2:12. He did this in bandy style, and was not urged at any part of it. It is doubtful if he had his Derby weight up. Still, the work was satisfactory. When Governor Gray, the favorite for the big race, made his appearance he was greeted by quite a crowd and all work on the track improvements ceased temporarily. After a bit of a warm-up under the watchful eye of trainer .1. S. Fverman he was sent on his journey. He also went a mile and a quarter, covering the route in 2: II J, unextended. There was not the least sign of distress when he pulled up. Trainer Bveraaaa was constantly signaling the jockey to hold the horse iu check, as he was full of a desire to run. Capt. J. T. Williams expressed himself as thoroughly satisfied witli the trial and is certain that his horse will win Saturdays big race in easy fashion. Iu answer to what weight Governor Gray had up. Captain Williams said 118 pounds, which is six pounds less than he will carry on Saturday. Those who saw the trial were much Impressed with the ease with which the Derby favorite went along. After Governor Gray had finished his tiyout ami was being led off the track Colston appeared. He was the only one of the trio to an the full route of one mile and a half and he did it in easy style. being pulled up in the last quarter. He was sent a mile and a quarter in 2:11*. and finished pulled up at the end of a mile and a half in 2:40. While he did not have his weight up he made a good inipros sion on those who witnessed the work. He is thor-cuhly fit said trainer Raleigh Colston. Superintendent Larry Bogenschutz was busy during the day putting away the horses. A special train brought tifty-seven racers from Louisville. T. C. McDowell had twelve on the train, including the great two-year-old The Manager, which has some Important stake engagements at Latonia. lima was left at Louisville to run in the Oaks. Others on the special were Henry McDanirl with a string of 12. Tlamias Fortune Ryan. 0, including the sensational Wondawby: Max liirsch. with .!; C. K. Hughes. !: J. T. Ireland, 8, and L. Manna, •"• The stables .»t L. P. Doerhofer. consisting of ten bones and W. EL Fizer. with fifteen, came later in the day. Others with small strings included George Marltrian. F. B. Stevens. .1. I.ally. W. A. Buck. F. M. Hopper. P. Xorris. Weil Pros, and E. F. Miller. There is a shortage of cars at Louisville, and the special went right back to the Falls City to bring another consignment today. The work of oiling Madison pike is finished and the road is in splendid condition for motoring and driving.
