LATONIA OPENING TODAY ■ OUTLOOK IS FOR BEST MEETING EVER HELD AT FAMOUS OLD COURSE. i i i I Governor Gray Is Held in Highest Esteem for Latonia | Derby, at One and a Half Miles, Stellar Feature ] ; of Opening Day — Society Folk Interested. a i l flTl— 111. .. June i. — Everything is in thorough j readiness for tomorrows opening of I.atonias thirty -oae i.i.s race meeting, which holds out every prom-ise if I illimlai in a racing way all previous meet- J ings at fair Latonia. Never before i.u the eve of ■ local meeting has tin- , iiiic degree Of local interest 1m cu manifested, nor lias then- been sucli a gathering of out-of-town visi- , tors on liainl awaiting the bugle call. Accommodations in the leading liostclrics ol" Cincinnati arc alii ad.v al.out exhausted and laic comets without , reservations will lind it no easy task to procure -uitaldc quarters. The change in local sentiment towards Latonia racing is really marvelous. Representative folk who formerly looked on the racing here with disdaiu are actually interested this season. Advance orders for box reservations for Derby day are of large volume and the accommodations are being Bought by some or the best people of Cincinnati ami the adjacent territory. All of which augurs well for au auspicious season of racing here. From the BtaadneiBt of high-class racing Latonia lias never before bad the same opport unity. Among the horses quartered at the course are some of the best racers in training in this country. Their owners lave shipped here from every section of the country. In the matter of riding material Latonia will this season also fare well, for almost every rider of prominence can l e found among lie fifty or more that are registered in the secretarys office. With flue weather, which is indicated for tomorrow, the attendance that will witness the opening will, it is thought, shatter all former records for IL opening days. Preparations for their accommoda-W ib.n have been perfected and little confusiou is y mkitl Im. Chief interest naturally centers in the running of the Derby, in which eleven three-year-olds, rep resenting the bent of that age in the west, are carded i to start. Of those carded Round the World and forehead arc expected to be absentees, leaving a licld of nine to contest for the 1911.sh,000 and the distinction that goes to the winner. Governor Gray, a 1ormidaWe factor up to date in all the three-year-old i events decided this season, is held in most esteem i and is regarded as the likely winner by a majority of raiting folk. Star Charter, backed by the hopes ; of the Tennessoeans. is not lacking for friends and [ his victory would not be a great surprise. Messenger Hoy also loomed dangerous in the light of his i lecent good performances and his success tomorrow • would lie immensely pleasing locally, because of his i being owned and trained by a Cincinnatian. Capt. J. T. Williams, the developer of Governor r Cray, is eereaely confident of the outcome. To his ; notion the race will not even have the semblance • of a contest. He expects Governor Gray to win as ; his rider pleases. .lohn C. Schorr, who is handling Star Charter, is ., -.Histied that his charge will give a good account r of himself and predicts that the horse which beats Star Charter will be tjie winner. Messenger Roys owner also feels that this colt will be a smart I factor. He would have liked to have had T. Kiht ner to ride his horse and has not altogether despaired uf getting this rider for his pilot. Kound ] the World showed liy her running in tin- Kentucky iiaks yesterday that she is far from her host form I ami it" is thought unlikely that she will go to the Bent Inless rain should come and the track get muddy. .1. R. Kespcss will mil start Forehead. Colston and j Mud Sill arc looked upon as sure starters. There was talk of Mr. Golightly going to the post, but . the secretary has no know ledge of the horse being at the course and has not learned that it is his own its intention to start him.
