Shannon. made a new track record for five and a half fur longs today when he ran the distance in the third mee in 1:0"-. Shannon was an odds-on favorite in his race, followed Ben Loyal to the Stretch turn and in a driving finish wore the latter down and heat him a head la the final stride. It was a great day lor the followers of favorites, four first choices and well -backed Second choice lieing the winners. The lacing conditions were perfect, the weather being warm and clear and the track in splendid condition. The attendance was up to the high standard of tin previous davs of the meeting and the sport of ex oellent quality. S. C. Hildreth furnished another Winner during the afternoon when Montgomery galloped home in advance of My Gal in the seventh race. It was a selling affair and Sam Louis, whose My Gal finished second, boosted Montgomery 00 over his entered price of . Mr. Hildreth pro tected his old plater and lxiught him in. In the opening dash, which was for Canadian-owned two vear olds, the provincc-hred Ondramon heat the Vii ginla bred Garth a head in a stirring stretch drive. Garth is a colt that Capt. W. F. lresgravc purchased for C. S. Campbell from William Garth. It was the youngsters maiden effort and he showed keen speed in he early stages hut faltered ill the final drive. Grastnere". making his first appearance of the year, proved an easy winner in the second race, winning in runaway fashion and beating Joe Madden a length. Only two of the four starters in the steeplechase finished. It proved an easy victory for that good and consistent fencer. Jimmy Lane, which led all the way and was] in a canter. Expansionist bolted at the third jump ami Come On unseated his rider at the same fence. The division of he Seagram stable that has been taking part in the meeting here departed for I la mi 1 ton tonight. Several other owners will leave for the same jioint tomorrow. Woods Stockton, a cousin of William Garth, arrived from Virginia this morning. He came up to witness the Fatherless colt Garths maiden effort. The Montreal Jockey Club announced the condl tions of two steeplechases to be run during its fall meeting. One is for three-year-olds to carry 19$ pounds at a mile and a half, and another for three year olds and maiden four and li*e year olds over the two mile coarse. Jockey Shillings suspension expired yesterday and he was in the saddle today. He earned a tine of $.10 for rough riding in the third race, which lie won with Shannon.
