Meridian, began his racing career as a two-year-old In a purse race at Oravcscnd. June II. 1910, Ic was a successful debet, he winning by a length and a half from Rogon. with Fair Miss third and ten others unplaced, at five and a half furlongs in 1:11 over a sloppy track. In his next race, the Treinont Stakes, he fell, and in his third, the Foam Stakes, at Sheepshead Bay. he ran third to Royal Meteor and Whist after making the pace to the last sixteenth. Colston was one of the four unplaced. Ho was then Bantered in the Great Trial Stakes at the same track. Hound the World winning, with Iron Mask second and Naushou third. He was more fortunate in his next essay, winning a purse at five and a half furlongs in 1:08%, with Aldrian second. Novelty third and Watervale among the unplaced ones. Novelty was the favorite, hut had not ripened into his best form and tired after leading to half way down the stretch. July 4. in the second half of the Double Event, he finished second to Footprint, with Naushon third. Novoity. Cowl and Kingpin ran unplaced. He carried 122 pounds and was beaten a length and a half in 1:11 at three-quarters straight. Then he was taken to Saratoga and ran unplaced to Textile. Whist ami Semprolus in the Hurricana Stakes. August i. and to Novelty. Iron Mask and Naushon in the rich Saratoga Special, which was run August 13. August 27 he was again unplaced. This time it was to Novelty. Naushon and Textile in the .0.On Henssclaer Handicap. BoaTbOB Heau. Which created a sensation by winning at long odds at Louisville recently, was fourth and Meridian fifth. Semprolus. Round the World. oiston and Whist were among those which finished behind Meridian. That ended his unsuccessful Saratoga campaign. At Montreal. September 10, he defeated Leah, F.dda and five others for a purse at five and a half furlongs in 1:00:,-,. After that he ran twice unsuccessfully, finishing second to Footprint at Toronto at three .quarters in 1:13%, with Wrap third and Star Charter among the unplaced ones, and running second to Ieus at Iimlieo in a three quarter dash In 1:12%. Altamnha was third and three more unplaced. All around. Meridians record as a two year-old was a good one and he showed well in competition with the best of his age. That be would make a good three-year-old was plainly portended. Heports of his having wintered well were current this spring and verified by his running when brought inlo action on the race track. His first start was in a dash of three-quarters of a mile at Lexington. May 6 In which he ran second to Chapultepec in such fast time as 1:12. a new track record. May Hi in the Blue Grass Stakes, he was beaten by Governor Gray in a stabboraJy contested race at a mile and an eighth in which lack of condition told at the end and led to his succumbing by a half length In 1:51% again a new rack record.
