MONTREAL MEETING ENDS CLOSING DAY AT BLUE BONNETS MARKED BY A BRILLIANT ASSEMBLAGE. Earl Grey, Governor-General of Canada. Attends in State and Is Given Great Ovation — J. W. Schorr Scores a Double with Aylmer and Froglegs. Montreal Que.. June 10.- The spring season of racing at Blue Bonnets came to a close with the running of todays program. The Montreal Jockey Club provided a card Of eight races, two of which were steeplechases ;111d fWo ,,f the others handicaps as the Mat. Despite dark clouds which hovered over the course, a brilliant assemblage turned out, the attendance being the largest of the meeting. His Excellency Karl Grey attended in state and was given an ovation not only by loyal Canadians, but by the visiting horsemen as well who have learned to admire this broad minded and gallant sportsman. More enthusiasm was manifested over the racing than on any day during the meeting and when Stoe Lass, owned by the local sportsman. Colin Campbell, came from behind and beal Bigot in the Prince of Wales Steeplechase the vast tkcoag in the grandstand rose to their feet and made the hills of Mount Royal echo with applause. The Prince of Wales Steeplechase was over the long course. Steve Lane was the extreme outsider in the betting and in the early stages was a distant trailer. Not until the last quarter mile did he loom as a factor, hut at the finish be closed with a sparkling burst of ■eed and beat the tiring Bigot and The Welkin. The Welkin bled during the running and was eased up. The tabled history of the Prince of Wales Steeplechase is as follows: Year. Winner. A.Wt. Jockey. Val. SchOR of Memphis were carried to victorv bv Flog less and Aylmer. The latter met some of the best, distance rimmis racing in Canada in the mile and a quarter handicap. He was ridden by Gay Garner. trailed Bloag in the rear division until making the turn into the long homestretch, then moved up coarag sly and ill the final furlong disposed of Everett and Stanley Fay. beating the former a couple of lengths. Ihe mile aad a quarter waa run in 2:045, which marked a new track record for tho distance. Olamhala. the top weight and favorite of the race, was third. Froglegs simply made a show of his company in the second race, winning in little more than a canter. He broke rather slowly, but went around the others with a rush and was soon out in front with a good lead. Trainer B. A. Brewster timed the colt separately the first half mile in 4tij!. The colors of R. T. Wilson were borne to victory for the first time in a steeplechase when Brushbroom won the third race. Olsen, an apprentice under contract to Hugh Penny, showed good form today. He rode the winners in the last two races and his finish on Carrlllon was an excellent hit of riding. A majority of the layers that operated at Blue Bonnets will go from here to Hamilton, where the meeting opens on Saturday next. A. N. Elrod. representative of Smith and Jones, was a visitor at the course this afternoon looking after their interests. He reports many additional layers will come from New York. A majority of the horsemen have arranged to ship from here to Hamilton on Monday. R. F. Carman and S. C. Hildreth will send down about eighteen horses. The remainder of their strings will probably Ik- sent to Saratoga.
