GREAT THRONG AT HAWTHORNE. Crowd Estimated at 20. COO Turns Out to Witness Decision of Racing Program. Further proof of the tremendous local popularity of racing was afforded by the presence of a crowd esthnsted at apwarda of 20,000 at Hawthorne track yesterday, when the meeting under the auspices of the Letter Carriers, continued from Monday, was bnnszht to a snccessfal close. That such a crowd honjd gather to see racing conducted under the conditions that necessarily prevailed, seasides a striking illustration of the appetite of Chlcagoans lor the sport, notwithstanding its extended |M-i-i-«i of dormancy and presages wonderful prosperity for it should circumstances permit a resumption of racing hereabouts. At the outset of yesterdays proceedings at the track certain venturesome layers of odds became ex- Bagly bold and offensive in their operations. The result was that the police employed by the manage no nt took int.. custody several of the most flagrant offender*. Thereafter betting went on, but in a ■ore subdued and unostentatious way. There, was no general display of odds, but those who were aasJona to back their opinions readily found the opportunity. Yesterdays contests were even more interesting than those of the preceding day. several of the tin -Mies being exceedingly close. The starting was gi norally satisfactory and the outcome of the days ■p it sent the big crowd sway Well satisfied. Most of the horses and jockeys that participated in the racing will return to Kentucky forthwith. As on the opening day, creditable time was recorded in till the tace.s yesterday, indicating that the track is in excellent condition, notwithstanding lis long period of disuse. Announcement was made yesterday for the benefit of the thousands in attendance that Labor Day. Sei.teinber L would bring another racing program at the track Under the allspices of certain of the labor srgaaJsattona of the city.
