ROUND THE WORLD AGAIN HERSELF. W. G. Yankees Fleet Filly Beats Best Horses in West in Winning Latonia Stakes. Cincinnati. .. July 4. Round the World today won the Independence Handicap from the best opposition that could be mustered at La tools. Countless was second ami .Nimbus third. The stake was the feature of a good card and carried a gross value Of .ooo. the winners net share being .ito. rif teen were originally named to go. but Messenger Bay, Milton B., Princess Callaway, Joe Morris. White Wool ami Governor Gray declined the Issne. Ihe al settee of the last named from the race was disappointing to many who had gone to the track expressly to witness his performance. The reason given for his failure to start was that he had shipped badly from Fort Erie and had not arrived al the track until 1 n. Ocean Bound and Count less were hold in greatest favor by the bettors, while Star Charter and Nimbus also came in for a fair share of speculative attention. R.mnd the World was lucky at the start, getting away fully in her stride and her early flight of sliced enabled her to secure a commanding lead and remain clear of interference. Jockey Thomas steadied her after rounding the upper turn, but when pressed by Nim bus and Countless, set her down again and she continued in the van throughout. The struggle for second place was always between Nimbus and Countless after Ocean Bound had dropped out of it in the first half and Countless outstayed Nimbus in the closing drive. Star Charter ran a splendid race. Off last and Damped by Polls, he was a distant trailer, but closed an immense gap to finish iii fourth place. The running of Kings Daughter in this race marked her last racing performance. Her owner. T. C. McDowell, announced after the race that she would be forthwith retired from the turf for all time. She will bo sent to Ashland Farm ultimately to enter the stud. Todays torrid weather detracted from the enjoy-no nt of the racing and caused intense discomfort to the big gathering of spectators. The only cool place within the enclosure was the betting ring, where numerous electric fans exercised an alleviating effect. The betting portion of the attendance again suffered losses by the failure of the best-backed horses to finish as expected. The chief disappointments of the afternoon were Mary Emily. Buckhorn, Follie Levy. Countless. Forehead and Fort Johnson. Buck-horn was regarded as the best betting proposition of the day. but he readily succumbed to Presumption. Ethel P. proved by a decisive victory over Follie Levy that her recent victory in the Brewers Exchange Handicap was not a fluke. She caried even weights with the Odom filly this afternoon and led for the entire trip to win as her ride- pleased. The lac nasi stent stein- Street again ran to his best form and made the goad band of platers that started in the closing dash appear ordinary. Ida May taking second place and Queen Marguerite third. Jockey Obort had his left leg badly injured as a result of coining in contact with the fence while astride Oagnant in the opening race. His moent was caught in a jam soon after the start. Messrs. H. K. Knapp and F. R. Hitchcock returned today to New York, but announced that they would probably return here to witness the running of the Cincinnati Trophy on Saturday next. Praetorian was withdrawn from the opening race, because of a slight lameness and will probably be rested until fall. Todays speculation was heavy and those successful in picking winners were rewarded with good odds. Jockey Tapiin rode today with his face liberally covered with eonrtplaster, having sustained the in juries in a mysterious attack last Sunday.
