SHERIFF ENFORCES LAW AT HAWTHORNE. Deputies Swarm Through Betting: Ring, Grandstand and Paddock Seven Arrests Made. Racing at Hawthorne track under the auspices of the Union Labor Business Agents Association of Chicago begun yesterday afternoon according to schedule in the presence of a crowd of enthusiasts estimated to nnmber 2,500. Sheriff Michael Zinimer of Cook County was on hand with 100 or more deputies and rigidly enforced the anti-betting law of Illinois. Seven arrests were made, including one or two alleged layers of odds and several individuals who are charged with participating in purely friendly wagers. What betting went on was conducted strictly on the oral plan. The arrested men were taken to Oak Park for arraignment. John J. Brittain. who- is prominent in the management of the meeting, declared to the press representatives for publication that Sheriff Zimniers policy of handling the situation met with the sympathy and endorsement of the promoters. He further said that lie looked for the attendance of a big crowd tomorrow as a demonstration of the great demand for racing in Chicago regardless of the betting angle.- Genuine enthusiasm was displayed, the winners being lustily cheered just as in the days when the sport was a popular pastime hereabouts.
