CARMAN DAY AT LOUISVILLE EASTERN TURFMANS HORSES TAKE HALF OF THE CHURCHILL DOWNS CARD. Campeon, Starbotile and Colonel Ashmeadc Make Up Trio of Winners at Good Odds Golden Rod Stakes Marred by Rough Riding Tactics. Louisville, Ky., September 28. R. F. Carman cut a widt; swath in todays results at Clmrcliill Downs, representatives from bis stable accounting for half the card of six races. Jockey Hoffman shared in the stables triumph, as he was astride the trio of winners, lie inaugurated his success in the second race on Campeon, followed bv taking the handicap on Starbottle, and wound up with a victory in the closing dash on the much improved Colonel Ash-meade. The followers of the stable profited extensively, as good prices ruled against all three winners. The Golden Rod Stakes, for two-year-olds, at three-quarters, with selling conditions, and the feature of the card, was marred somewhat by interference suffered by Azyiade, the favorite. Island Queen was the offender, due to frequent swerving. The latter, ridden by Koerner. was away from the burner like a flash and, maintaining a steady pace, led Azyiade and Kaiser, her closest followers, during the first three furlongs by a wide margin. Azyiade and Kaiser then both made a bid for the lead, but Kaiser, trying to get through on the inside, was forced back and had to go around the leaders. He overtook Island Queen in the final furlong, atid was drawing away near the end. Azyiade attempted to pass Island Queen in the stretch, but Koerner foiled Goose by pulling over. The others were beaten off at all times and dirt not figure in the running. Goose, the rider of Azyiade, failed to lodge a complaint of foul, and the judges did not disturb the original placing. They susiended Koerner, however, for five days for his rough-riding tactics. There was some comment on account of Kaisers being entered for 00, and many gathered around the judges stand in anticipation of a run-up, but no bids materialized. At Lexington Kaiser was bid up to 1,400 and pur-chased bv his owner. He has since won two stakes. Alwut the worst disappointment that the public suffered during" tiie. afternoon came with the run-, lilhg of the inlle-and a sixteenth handicap in which Milton W. was a distant trailer. On the strengtn of his good second to Little rather, he was made favorite, but was hold safe in the running by Star-lmttle and Spohn. The race wis run in 1:44J, equaling the track record made by Mary Davis on the opening day of this meeting. Mack 15. Kubanks demonstrated that be is ri fair eolt by handily scoring in the opening rac. Wyandot might have given him an argument but for suffering an injury that caused him to quit after being in a commanding load. Beautiful was a supposed "good thing" in the race, but she raced in dull fashion- and will improve in future starts. Kniily Lee and Fairy Story figured in a rattling contest in the liftli race and landed noses apart in the order named, with Swish and Sigurd also engaged in a desperate struggle for third place. Sigurd was given a weak ride and it accounted for his failure to get any portion of the purse. The newcomer, Swarts Hill, owned by Ihil Hyams was heavily supported in this race and figured prominently in the interference that came repeatedly lliring the running. Henry McDaniel lias severed bis connections as trainer for I. H. Wlieatcroft and has turned King Broomstick and Embracer over to Mr. Wlieatcroft. Mr. McDaniel will take the horses lie has in his charge, owned by Edwin Gaylord, to Juarez for winter racing. Mr. McDaniel intends to conduct a public training stable next season. Bonnie Kelso will not lie a starter in the Kentucky Endurance Stakes to be run October 7, as be is on the ailing list with a swollen knee, which will keep him out of training for some time. -General Manager Matt J. Winn announced the engagement of Harry Morrissey, chief assistant to Starter Mars Cassidy, as starter at Mexico City during the seventeen-days fall meeting, to be held iu November. Mr. Morrissey will also do the starting during lie Hose Tree Hunt meeting, October l!i-i:-14-l.r. Capt. E. B. Cassatt. prominently identified with the last named meeting, having secured Mr. Cassidys consent to allow Morrissey to go there to il l the starting. Tom Brown will accompany William II. Shelly to Mexico City and serve iu an official capacity. : H. G. Bedwell intends to send Prince Ahmed to Laurel to run in the Inaugural Handicap, in which the horse is assigned to 114 pounds, and is considered in his present form to have an excellent chance to win the stake. Francis J. Pons will go to Charleston, S. C, within the next few days and look over the situation willi a view to a race meeting the coming winter. If conditions are ripe, he will rush work on the new plant and have it in readiness for opening jibotit Jan. 10. Mr. Pons speaks hojicfiilly of consummating liis plans successfully. The rider on Wyandot had to dismount and lead the colt back to the judges stand. The injury appeared to be a bowed tendon. Polly D. also came out of the race in bad condition. The successful combination, consisting of Mack 15. Eubanks and Campeon. paid :5.25. The three-horse combination went to the field players, Emily Lee upsetting all the individual selections. Secretary Jasper has provided for Monday next a mile and a half race, as a preliminary for the four-luile Kentucky Endurance Stakes. The object of the race is to give candidates for the big event a try-out 3n a race over a considerable distance of ground. Secretary Jasper takes it that owners would prefer to run their stars for a purse rather than work thom in ordinary morning trials. The conditions of the race are: "Purse $.00, for three-year-olds and upward; five pounds below the scale. Winners of three races or .$.00 value Ibis year, four pounds extra. Others 5ion-.winners of two races other than soiling purses since May 1, allowed four pounds if such have not won a race since September 12, ten pounds; one mile and a half."
