J, : rf, STATISTICS OF KENTUCKY RACING Review of the Season Recently Ended, Illustrating Growing Importance of the Sport at Louisville, Latonia and Lexington Tracks 4, Kentucky racing for 1911 is at an end after n season of the sport that probably is entitled to char-netellzation as the most successful, all things considered, in the long and honorable history of the pastime iu the Blue Grass State, the acknowledged home of the thoroughbred in Arnorica. Profiting from the suspension of racing in New York state, the three racing organizations under the jurisdiction of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, conducted meetings that were notable for the brilliancy of the racing and the high quality of the sport generally. Each of the three tracks in the state Churchill Downs, Latonia and Lexington conducted spring and fall meetings that embraced an aggregate of lit! racing days, as compared with 112 days in 1910 and the ame number in 1909. The distribution for the year in stakes and purses reached the higlily satisfying total cf M02.799. as compared with 355,999 in 1910 and !?2GS,215 in 1909. This is a remarkable showing and strikinglv illustrates the constantly increasing importance of Kentucky racing. The figures for 1911 represent aii increase of 1G,S00 in distribution over 1910 and a gain of 194,5S4 over 1909. The daily average distribution for the year is ?3,9S9.G5, as against 3,178.50 for 1910 and 2,394.09 during 190!. All three racing organizations the Kentucky Association, the Iiuisville Racing Association and the Latonia Jockey Club contributed to the increase in proportionate degree. By decree of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, the auction pool form of betting, which had been permitted in conjunction with the parl-mutuel method following the aliolitlon of bookmaking on the Kentucky tracks several years ago, was ordered discontinued prior to the opening of the fall meetings and the pari-muiuels constitute now the only legal method for betting In connection with the races in Kentucky. The pari-mutiicls are popular in Kentucky and the sport will doubtless continue to thrive with that exclusive method of speculation. Important stables from the east participated iu the racing on all the Kentucky tracks this season to a greater degree than ever. High-class horses were frequently seen in action and all in all the racing was of an elevating character. It probably is true that racing in Kentucky is now on a letter basis than ever before in its history. The following tabulation shows the general results of the racing of 1911 on the various Kentucky courses: 5; i si j5 sisisssJOs c r c o 5 2.S, a - 3 3 s irs g g g p -p " o a r o" E Track and Meeting. : 8. 8 3 o 5. o 3 a a o"2 i : 1 1 8 a i P ? s? Ilallenheck and R. F. Carman, two wealthy New Yorkers who raced pretentious strings, on the circuit, stand respectively first and second in the list of money-winning owners. The former, whose horses are handled bv trainer F. M. Taylor, finished the season with 24,4S0 to his credit, the lions share of which was won by his crack two-year-old colt, Worth. In Mr. Carmans stable earnings of 22,1S7, Meridian, the Kentucky Derby winner of 1911, played an important part. The stable of John W. Schorr, of Memphis, is a creditable third with winnings of 18,393. Others above the 10,000 mark include George M. Odom, J. R. Walnwright and T. C. McDowell.
