TRAINING NEWS FROM LOUISVILLE George J Longs Derby Candidates Doing Well Many Horses Coming from Charleston CharlestonLouisville Louisville Ky April 10 George J Longs Derby candidates Nicias and Free Lance did todays fast ¬ est work at Churchill Downs They went three quarters In 118 going the first quarter In 2G and the half in 52 Both apparently could have run much faster had they been urged At Douglas Par The Manager went threequarters in 122 cantering This was in preparation for a trial at that course tomorrow morning The Manager is in grand condition conditionThe The best work by twoyearolds at either track was a quarter in 23 by George J Longs Sem pronioiis Altuda filly Other good trials were wereCrowsfoot Crowsfoot Half mile in 58 cantering Froglegs canteringFroglegs Quarter mile in 27 Looks good goodHenry Henry Reddle Quarter mile in 24 handily handilyHigh High canteringHamilton Private Threeeighths in 40 cantering Hamilton Threeeighths In 43 cantering Inquieta canteringInquieta Oneeighth in 14 14Imprudent Imprudent Threeeighths in 42 under double wraps readyMilo John Louis Half mile in 50 Is ready Milo Threeeighths in 30 30McCorkle McCorkle canteringPrince Quarter mile in 24 cantering Prince Hermis Quarter mile in 24 24Round Round easilyStar the World Threeeighths in 41 easily Star handilyShapdnlc ORyan Quarter mile in 26 handily Shapdnlc Half mile in 50 pulling up canteringTraveller Star upStar Charter Quarter mile in 20 cantering Traveller canteringTrance Fiveeighths in 112 cantering Trance Quarter mile In 24 cantering Edward Taylor has wired the New Louisville Jockey Club that a special train of eleven carloads of horses will leave Charleston for Churchill Downs on the morning of April 20 The Carman string and that of James S Everman which Include the horses of some half dozen owners will each require two cars to transport them here On the same date a special train will also leave Charleston for Lex ¬ ington with six or seven cars of horses All of these will be brought here at the close of the Lexington meeting meetingL L P Doerhoefers stable trained by Shelby West which came from Charleston comprises the older racers Mary Davis Ursula Emma Tommie Thomp ¬ son Jack Ellis Gold of Ophir and Tillies Night ¬ mare and the following twoyearolds George Karme Bandacob by Ort Wells Katie Havlin Jimmie Gill Ursula Thompson Madeline and Irish Mike The latter is a chestnut son of Ort Wells Mr Doerhoefer has decided to mate his noted mare Mellsande which broke down last fall at Latonia with O A Bianchis wellbred horse Jim Gaffney Mr Biancbi received a letter today from California which stated that four colts had been foaled there sired by this horse and out of mares owned by him All are thriving save the colt out of Lavena C which was killed when his dam accidentally rolled upon him himC C F Berryman manager bf J B Haggins fam ¬ ous Elmendorf Farm accompanied by John F Payne another prominent Kentucky turfman visited T C McDowell at Douglas Park today to take a look at The Slanager and observe his preparation for his Derby engagement Mr Berryman says there are still a hundred mares at Elmendorf Farm but theso will be reduced to some fifty head Such mares as Hamburg Belle and Tradition will be among those retained There are but ten stallions now on the place the most prominent of which are Star Ruby Watercress Waterboy Africander and Royal Flush III Mr Haggin has fiftysix yearlings this season and all these will be shipped to England to be sold soldJohn John Waltcrs the Canadian trainer has a rare band of twoyearolds in his barn at Douglas Park They consist of a brother to Bourbon Beau a colt by The Commoner out of the dam of Commoners Touch and Notasulga a chestnut colt by The Com ¬ moner Bessie McCarthy n black colt by Lord Esterllng OhiyoKa a l rovn colt by Lord Esterllng Flora Handsome a bay colt by Lord Esterling Lucrece a bay filly by Lord Esterllng Brief and a chestnut colt by Lord Esterling Salara by Salvator The only horse he has in his stable that is over twoy arolds is the wellknown fouryearold Mc Ivor which Is training well for him this spring Mr Walters has worked several of the twoyearolds in his string since coming to Douglas Park quarters in 24 and several have gone half a mile in about r 0 He has no eligibles for the Breeders Futurity and will therefore ship none of his string to Lex ¬ ington ingtonThe The only stables at Douglas Park which will send nny horses to Lexington this spring are those of T C McDowell and T P Hayes Both these turf ¬ men will send quite a string of horses to race at the Kentucky Association track
