THE RUNNING OF THE LINCOLNSHIRE The English flat racing campaign of 1912 began at Lincoln Monday March 23 under adverse cir ¬ cumstances Owing to the great strike of coal miners and resultant scarcity of fuel the railroads did not furnish the usual excursion trains from London and inadequate means of transportation hml the eftect of cutting down the attendance to less than half the customary figures but the racing program was pluckily carried out and the sport itseK was of high class The principal feature the Lincolnshire Handicap at a mile was run Tuesday afternoon and proved easy for Sol Joel s Long Set he winning about as easily as he did the Cam ¬ bridgeshire Handicap last fall Sporting Lifes de ¬ scription of the race was as follows followsHornets Hornets Beauty was the first saddled and be ¬ ing excused the preliminaries was led to the post the others parading in the order of the card Com Ing under Mr A Coventrys charge well to time Warfare Clnderello and Shauballymore displayed some anxiety to be off but taking everything into consideration they were a fairly wellbehaved lot xiiirtcen inlnutes after the advertised time of the race the tapes were released to a perfect start all mBii ° le unbroken line True Great Surprise intJ intJiiJ iiJ tc cctrlc ° f speed was the quickest MtJmt H1 H11V 1V but wo1 l11 Aether Spiked on the ht and CKar at llls lloels stretched ownv Z vancc of Unclc Pat and Grcat Surprise iMHor i then L after alm st in I1 wnter going very well a Blight interval came Warfare Mor cutio Long Set and Hornets Beauty the latter with a berth to himself wide on the left while Toiler and Sobieski were about the most conspicuous of the remainder who were nil well bunched ex ¬ cepting Moscato who was outpaced Leaving outpacedLeaving the junction of the courses Spiked col ¬ lapsed rapidly and Cigar was left four lengths In front of Great Surprise and Uncle Pat with Long Set striding out strongly clear of Warfare and Mer cutio the latter now falling back somewhat in com ¬ pany with Sobieski while Moscato was still thu whipperin Cigar retired almost as rapidly as dlil Spiked while at the end of six furlongs Great Sur ¬ prise distressUncle showed signs of distress Uncle Pat who had always been lying well up with the leaders then came on hotly pursued ny Long Set the pair at the commencement of the last two furlongs being well out from Warfare who was racing with his head in the air Uncle Pat held his rival for a few strides but Long Set soon came striding away and although shown the whi with ¬ out being hit he won easily by four lengths three lengths separated second and third thirdMoscato Moscato threeparts of a length away wus fourth Sobieski a length further off fifth Mer cutio not ridden clean out sixth Hornets Beauty eased seventh Hayden eighth Spiked led for half a mile ninth Shanballymore tenth Ben Alder eleventh Fairy Maid twelfth Toiler ran fairly well thirteenth Great Surprise up with the lead ¬ ers for six furlongs fourteenth My Collar never prominent fifteenth Cigar unreliable sixteenth and Cinderello last Time 144 144Long Long Set like Ypsilanti Dean Swift Victor Wild and other good handicap horses before him started his career as far as racing in England is concerned as a selling plater It was on the scene of his yesterdays brilliant victory that a selling race coup was engineered with him Then Henry Bathe his trainer purchased him on behalf of his present owner ownerHornets Hornets Beauty and Mercutio numbered one and two on the card for the Lincolnshire Handicap drew the same number at the draw for positions at the start Bent on giving the public a run for their money Sir W Cooke insisted on his gelding going to the post though his trainer feared that such a step might jeopardize the animals future career so stiff was the horse in his offshoulder Considering his crippled state the topweight ran amazingly well and was well in the fighting line for more than twothirds of the journey albeit when all chances of success were gone Winter did not persevere with him to the last As It was Hornets Beanty finished seventh and It is to be hoped that the race will not have any lasting ill effect geldingThe on the gallant gelding The other principal event of the meeting was the Brockelsby Stakes for twoyearolds run on the last day of the meeting This is the first race of importance for twoyearolds annually run in Eng ¬ land Last year it was won by the Americanbred colt Mr Peeper and this year an Americanbred filly was second to Leopold de Rothschilds Polo ¬ nium This was J B Haggins chestnut filly Final Shot by Watercress Isiac She was only beaten threequarters of a length and is probably a fine filly The winner Polonium is n bay colt by Radium Gelatine and is the first of that noted horses progeny to start in a race He was ridden by Danny Maher Mr Haggin has several horses in charge of trainer Joe Butters at Newmarket and Final Shots race was his debut in English racing
