CONNAUGHT CUP FOR BLUE BONNETS GovernorGeneral of Canada Presents Trophy to the Montreal Jockey Club Montreal Que April 10 A pleasing announce ¬ ment is made by the management of the Montreal Jockey Club This comes through the offer of their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Con naught to present a cup to be raced for fit the meetings of the Montreal Jockey Club at Blue Bonnets His Royal Highness the Duke of Con naught has always taken a keen interest in the thoroughbred and will follow the example of his pre ¬ decessors during his term of office as governorgen ¬ eral of Canada by encouraging the breeding of the thoroughbred in the Dominion With this object in view their royal highnesses have made this gift a perpetual challenge cup the winning of which from season to season will result in many a test of speed and stamina that will be well worth the witnessing witnessingBecause Because of the high office of field marshall which his royal highness holds in the British army he is setting a good example by thus encouraging the Im ¬ portation and breeding of the thoroughbred which means the fostering of a great industry and the es ¬ tablishment of Canada as a field for the furnishing of remounts for the English army The armyThe Improvement in the quality of thoroughbreds in Canada has been marked in recent years and perhaps more so in the Province of Quebec than in any part of Canada Each season sees a superior lot striving for honors in the numerous stakes raced for over the various tracks under the jurisdiction of the Canadian Racing Associations Last season saw the purchase locally of several horses which are eligible for the Counaught Cup that is to have its first running this spring It is sure to attract a large entry list listTo To the Connaught Cup the Montreal Jockey Club will add 1000 of which 200 will go to the second horse and 100 to the third This with the addi ¬ tion of the entrance and starting fees will make it the most valuable race for Canadianowned horses to be ruu at Blue Bonnets this spring The addition of the Counaught Cup will make five stakes for the spring ineetiug this year four of which are to be run on the Hat The other is the Prince of Wales Steeplechase through the field fieldThe The management of the Montreal Jockey Club has announced April 29 as the date for the closing of the spring dates There will be no purso of less value than 300 this spring which is an increase over last year and should prove an inducement to horsemen to make the trip to Blue Bonnets The following arc the stakes to be run during the spring meeting meetingThe The Connaught Cup A challenge cup presented by their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Connaught For threeyearolds and upwards owned prior to May 1 1912 by Canadians residing in Canada 1000 added distance one mile and a quarter quarterKindergarten Kindergarten Stakes 1000 added For twoyear olds selling fiveeighths of a mile mileWindsor Windsor Hotel Cup 1200 added For three yearolds and over one mile and an eighth eighthJacques Jacques Cartier Stakes 1200 added For three yearolds and over selling one mile milePrince Prince of Wales Steeplechase 1200 added A handicap for fouryearolds and over about two miles and onehalf
