NEWS OF DERBY TRIALS AND OTHER GOSSIP FROM KENTUCKY Louisville Ky April 12 Guaranola Henderson Hogans Kentucky Derby candidate did the fast ¬ est work of any of the cligibles to the big race at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park today This son of Garry Herrmann went six furlongs in 110 covering each quarter evenly the last five furlongs being accomplished in a shade better than 105 Guaranola Is more seasoned than the other Derby cligibles in training here with the exception of Patruche which also wintered in Mexico He looks exceptionally well and he does his work like a colt that will go remarkable escape from injury at Churchill Downs this inoiii ing He took fright and tossed the boy over the fence and as he threw his rider the horse turned a complete somersault on the track He was not in the least Injured and a few moments later the boy climbed over the fence remounted him and gave him his regular morning work workH H P Brandt did not bring Harrigan from Mex ¬ ico to the Downs He still has a determination to make no further attempt to race this good son of Plaudit and he left him in Texas in charge of Horace Jones to do stud service there this season Mr Brandt says he has on Ursula Emma to carry the Doerhoefer colors and If the track is heavy he thinks Tillies Nightmare capable of winning The latter Is a sister to tho Kentucky Derby winner of 1909 Wintergreen and should she win the Kentucky Oaks it would be the first case on record of a brother and sister figuring as winners of the Kentucky Derby and Oaks OaksC C C Van Meters string of twoyearolds are almost as far advanced in their preparation as if they had conic from a winter track instead of having been quartered at the Downs since last fall Several of these youngsters will be shipped to Lexington as Mr Van Meter has quite a representation in the Breeders Futurity to be decided there The Blues Queen Beluga colt In his band reminds one greatly of Arasec whicli is by the same sire He looks like a twoyearold that is likely to grow better as the season advances although even at present hcsecuis speedT to have a lot of speed T C McDowells crack Futurity candidate Mc Corklc was a little off his feed Wednesday night and was not worked with the other McDowell two yearolds yesterday The Major does not think there Is anything serious the matter with this promising racer but lie will take no chances in working the son of Disguise when he is not in the best of fettle The colt is far enough advanced in bis preparation to stand a day or twos letup without inconvenience inconvenienceAs As L P Doerhoefer has concluded to mate Ills famous mare Mclisandc with A Bianchls Jim Gaffney he will not send the marc to Lexington but she will be turned out here on the home farm in Jefferson County Considering the bad accident she met with last fall at Latonia she looks fairly well now although she still shows the marks of the cuts she received receivedT T Collins owner of Bourbon Beau has taken up his fouryearold filly Eton Hall As she looks well and appears to be sound he thinks she will be one bf the early maiden winners in Kentucky this spring The filly has not run since she carried the colors of Mrs twoyearoldJohn L A Livingston in Canada as a twoyearold John W Schorr will be represented by several horses at the coming Lexington meeting At least that is the present calculation by trainer J F Schorr who has charge of the Tennessee turfmans string at Douglas Park It is not likely that J B Kespess will do any racing at Lexington this spring He is not hurrying his horses In their preparation and will endeavor to get most of them ready for Churchill Downs racing although some of his twoyearolds will not be raced until the Latonia meeting and maybe not until they go to Canada Volthorpe Vrecland Water Welles Max Asur and McCreary are some of the older members of the Respess stable that arc training well this spring George springGeorge M Odoin has returned to the Downs from his trip to New York and has begun to put his string in active training again He intends to buy about a dozen yearlings this season having come to the conclusion that it pays better than going along with old horses due in a measure to his experience at Juarez last winter as he got his only profits from the twoyearold division of his stable Three such noted cracks as FolIIc Levy Fireman and Nim ¬ bus won just one race for him at Juarez while In ouieta for which he paid only 200 last fall won ix straight races racesDan Dan Lehans filly Kitty K Kentucky Oaks eligible cost her owner only 100 as a yearling She is named out of compliment to a daughter of Judge Kirby of this city and there will he great rejoicing in that jurists home next month should Kitty K succeed in winning the Oaks OaksTrainer Trainer William II Karrick has Fashion Plate again in training for H K Knapp and the noted son of Woolsthorpe has been entered for the Clark Louisville and Churchill Downs Handicaps and the Tobacco and Frank Fehr Stakes This liprse has been turned out for nearly a year He went wrong at Churchill Downs In the spring of 1911 and at that timo trainer Karrick feared lie would never race again
