DEATH OF NOTED ENGLISH TRAINER R G Sherrard passed out of life March 20 He was for many years one of the bestknown trainers of race horses Sherrard trained at The Nunnery Newmarket and subsequently In the provinces with a considerable amount of success one of his early winners being Corrie Roy who won the Cesarewitch in 1SS2 for fr Crawfurd ridden by C Wood For Sir Oeorge Clietwynd he prepared Kingwood who won many nice races in 1S84 including the Cham ¬ pion Breeders Foal Stakes at Derby During that year Slierrard saddled liftyoue winners Sherrard trained Fullerton when he won the City and Subur ¬ ban In 1888 for Sir George Chetwynd the horse also taking other nice races in the same season while a smart animal sent out by Sherrard was Senanus owned by Gen Owen Williams The colt won many events including the British Dominion Stakes San doivn Sudbury Stakes Derby and National Breed ¬ ers Produce Stakes Sandowu About the same time Acme Cassiinere Harpagon Great Breeders Pro ¬ duce Stakes Kempton King Milan and Shimmer were all winners of importance from the same stable Another good horse prepared by him was Mr Goodchilds Scullion who won the November Handicap at Warwick ridden by W Lane in 1901 1901In In the following season the daughter of St Florian was saddled by Sherrard when she captured the Ascot Stakes starting at 100 to 8 beating Cara ¬ bine W Lane up by a neck As a fiveyearold the mare won the Haydock Park Handicap and a couple of other items while in the following season she ran a deadheat with Roe ONeill for the Man ¬ chester Cup again starting at 100 to S and ridduu by II Randall with W Lane on Mr Gilpins colt Among other useful horses who passed through Sher rards hands earlier may be mentioned Sirdar who won the Great Surrey Handicap Epsom Spring also the Eginout Handicap Epsom Summer Do Wur ronne Handicap Lewes and the Chatsworth Stakes Derby November for Mr D Seymour and for the same owner Angelina captured the Great Tom Stakes Lincoln Suppliant the Welbeck Handicap Derby and Lady Fisher the Stanley Handicap ii Kempton Park with Sloan in the saddle saddleIn In 1S99 Sherrard trained Sir Hercules the winner of a Biennial at Ascot in the colors of Mr A W Merry and Scot Free from the same stable annexed the Hersham Two YearOld Race at Alexandra Park for Mr Garrett More A nice win for Sherrard was when Mr Merrys Runaway Lass another 100 to 8 chance defeated a warm favorite in Mr Fairies Cutaway by a neck for the Hyde Park Plate at Epsom in the same year while Martinis II scoml tlirice for Mr Merry the Items gathered in includ ¬ ing the Aliugton Handicap at the Bibury Meeting and the Goodwood Corinthian Handicap ridden by Mr G Thursby Following Scullions racing days Sherrard had charge of Schnapps also the property of Mr Goodchild the gelding securing the Midland Counties Handicap at Warwick in 1903 Rockbourm was another useful horse to pass through Sberrards hands He was owned by Col II T Fenwick and won the British Dominion TwoYearOld Race at Sandown starting at 20 to 1 with odds of 4 to 1 betted on Bellavista who failed to reach the first three As a threeyearold Rockbourne again a rank outsider appropriated the Durham County Pro ¬ duce Plate at Stockton For Mr Goodchild Cru ¬ sader was sent from the same stable to win the Surrey Stakes at Gatwlek for which event odds were conceded about Lally Sherrards last winner of note being Lydbrook who carried Colonel Fen wicks colors first home in the New Stand Handicap at Sandown in 1909 He retired into private life early iu the following season London Snortsman
