OWNERS OF KENTUCKY DERBY ELIGIBLES Louisville Ky April 20rOnly four of the owners of Kentucky Derby eligibles this season have ever had the distinction of winning the great race which tills spring will be decided at Churchill Downs on Saturday May 11 These are William Gerst owner of Working Lad Maj T C McDowell owner of The Manager George J Long who has Nicias and Free Lance engaged in the race and U F Carman who has Sherlock Holmes as an eligible eligibleJ J N Camden who is represented in the entry list by Wheelwright and Praetorian made a bid for the stake in 1009 with Miami So confident was he of this colts victory with a proper baud to guide him that ho secured the great rider C H Shilling to pilot him in the big race but the Englishbred colt met his superior in J B Respesss Wiutergreen ridden by V Powers The latter jockey is now In South America having grown so heavy as to make it impossible for him to ride under the present scale of weight in this country Sir Respess had an entry in the Derby this year but he long since declared the colt out The supposition is that the candidate was not of Derby class One turfman of prominence with a double entry In the event this season is James MacMauus a wealthy Californian He owns the noted Prfsumption and the sturdy George Oxnard Another owner of much prominence is HC Hal Ipnbeck the New York millionaire who has three entries for the coming DerbyWorth Sir Denral ami Recompense Mr Hallenl eck has only recently come into prominence as the owner of a big stable Last season he was quite successful ranking eighth In the list of nioueywiiming owners with earnings of ° 4 480 to his credit The Hallenlieck string Is trained by Frank M Taylor a souiulaw of that wizard of the turf S C Hildreth This in a way accounts for the allegiance of so many turfmen to the crack Worth Mr Taylor certainly knows how to fit a horse Another owner of a Derby starter is the Bourbon County turfman Catesby Woodford His entry is Souada which last year defeated both Worth and Presumption Colonel Woodford is president of tho Kentucky Association and in partnership with Col E F Clay chairman of the Kentucky State Racing Commission Colonel Woodfords name is con ¬ nected with many of the stars of the turf as a breeder These include Barnes Runnymede Miss Woodford Balston Raceland Hanover Belle of Runnymede and Butter Fly He also was the breeder of Agile winner of the Kentucky Derby of 1903 Colonel Woodford never has owned at the time of the running of the big race a winner of the Kentucky Derby but his brother J Hal Woodford won the stake in 1907 with Pink Star StarThere There Is still another owner of a Derby candidate who has been in the eye of the turf world He is C L Harrison whose entry iu the race is the Broomstick filly Winning Witch In 1910 Mr Harrison furnished the winter Derby favorite in Waldo the champion twoyearold of 1909 Waldo had been trained right up to the race and went wrong on the eve of its running His admirers have always claimed that had he started ho would have won the Derby DerbyAside Aside from G J Long Louisville owners having representatives in the race include L P Doer hocfer Dan Lehan and Henderson Hogan The first named two have never before had a starter In the Derby but Henderson Hogan have been represented in the race although they have not been sufficiently fortunate to win it They are real sportsmen and start their horses even when they know they are outclassed Guaranola which will carry the colors of Henderson Hogan in the big satisfactorilyAn race is training along satisfactorily An eastern owner of prominence R F Carman has Sherlock Holmes iu the Derby He is a promis ¬ ing brown colt by Inflexible which makes him a grandson of the mighty Hamburg Mr Carmans stable stood fourth in the list of winning owners last year his horses rolling tip a total of 33447 in stakes and purses pursesAnother Another Derby eligible is 0 J Caseys Cracker Box which at Charleston a few days ago de ¬ feated Sonada and Lady Lightning in a six and a half furlongs race Cracker Box is a son of Octagon the sire of Beldame winner of 102570 Owners 102570Owners of Derby winners of the past include II P McGrath D Swigert W W Darden J P Chinn W Cottrell J T Williams J B Haggin Alex Labold George V Hank ins Noah Armstrong Edward Corrigan Eugeue Leigh Byron McClelland J E Madden A H Morris and Capt S S Brown
