BREEDING CONDITIONS IN THE ARGENTINE An Argentine correspondent writes In the neighboring republics of Chile and Uraguay ther have some good racing especially at Montevideo Uruguay so that frequently horses from the Ar ¬ gentine are sent over to compete If racing In prosperous what must be said about breeding when such sensational figures are obtained for vearlings and with no indication that they will drop in price The Argentine breeder has been lavish in his pur ¬ chases of blood stock from England both in stal ¬ lions and mares and in no case has there been any ¬ thing but success attending it looking at it finan ¬ cially I have in my visits to Argentine seen prac ¬ tically every stud farm in that vastjf untry and one cannot but be struck with the uptodate way their establishments are conducted while the good buildings are supplemented with enormous paddock room It is a coincidence that the two race horses Mouchette by Pietermaritzburg and Larrea by Jardy should have for sires two which have been imported and that the latter should be first and second in the winning list this season Pictermaritz burg which died two years ago by St Simon out of Sea Air Is the leading winner of almut 175000 He was purchased to take Kendals place at the Ojo de Agua Stud an establishment which has done so much for the steady progress and de ¬ velopment of the thoroughbred in Argentina Since his death Polar Star and Cyllene were purchased for this stud and the forty yearlings by these sirca fetched roughly half a million dollars last Sep ¬ tember Jardy is second on the winning list not very far behind Pietermartizburg and for the past thiee years he has been well to the front his stock resemble him much particularly in color and marS marSI I ings and generally speaking are hardy I had almost forgotten to say that all sires are kept for use at their owners stud solely and the only chane of obtaining a service is by a friendly favor Other sires doing well are Diamond Jubilee Vnl dOr dOri i Orange Old Man etc
