RACING GOSSIP FROM CANADA Toronto Out April 30 Eastern Ontario has only occasionally in the last twenty years Wicker and Cardigan are two notable instances furnished im ¬ portant candidates for the Kings Plate A change in that condition of affairs though Is rapidly being brought about through the impetus given to breed ¬ ing by the operations of the Canadian Bureau of Breeding The Bureau stallions are not primarily intended to improve thoroughbred stock but for the propagation of halfbreds Their high breeding and successful racing careers naturally attract the attention of owners of thoroughbred mares and the result has been quite an addition to the supply of racing material Mr C L Hervey owner of the Black River Stables Lancaster Ont has three Provincebred yearlings They are by the Bureau stallion Rosemouut by Hastings Lady Rosemary by St Blaise They are areBrown Brown filly by Roscmount Decade Chief Kces dam by Esher Chestnut filly by Roscmount Jessamine Black ¬ burn by Luke Blackburn BlackburnBrown Brown colt by Rosemount Stagecraft a French mare by Sceneshifter Queen of France1 France1He He also has a fine twoyearold chestnut filly by Maxio Decade one by Ort Wells and one by Go Between all Dominionbred Mr Hervey has fivo mares due to foal within the next mouth to Earl Rogers a Bureau stallion by Sain by St Serf by St Simon dam sister to Uncle Bob Mr M J OBrien of Renfrew and Mr W H Williams of Pembroke also have thoroughbred mares due to foal to Rosemount The RosemountThe only arrivals at Woodbine today were the seven head owned by Harry Giddings of Cedar Grove Farm Oakville and they were declared to be as fine specimens of the thoroughbred as can be found anywhere Their breeder has a reputa ¬ tion of caring for and feeding his young horses which has brought him great results St Bass last vears Plate winner heads the lot The twoyear old Hearts of Oak by Bassetiaw Lady Lightfoot II a halfbrother of St Bass is the grandest horse of any age here hereOne One of the Waterloo yearlings was omitted from the list published It is a bay colt by Inferno Court Maid II His dam is the only Cyllene mare in America The yearlings at Waterloo are a rough and rugged lot They were not housed during the long winter except when the weather was wet wetThe The Brookdaie Farm has recently lost two good broodmares in Lady Black and Clannie The former was a daughter of Hamburg and Mary Black by Islington Clarmle by Sir Dlsou Roseville was a halfsister to Ben Brush The vacant places arc to be filled though and by the best blood obtainable on this side of the Atlantic or in the stud farm of the world worldCarroll Carroll Drake has arrived from Elyria O with E M Fry John Patterson and Minlastra
