PIPING ROCKS AMBITIOUS PROGRAM New York July 1C The Piping Rock Racing Association will open its new course at Locust Val ¬ ley Long Island with a threedays meeting in October under sanction from the Hunts Committee of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association The program in full which will be announced in a few days will include a number of novel yet at ¬ tractive events placing the Association at once in the front rank of those striving to foster and en ¬ hance racingOne amateur racing One of the features of the meeting will bo a re ¬ newal of the Harbor Hill Cup a steeplechase for threeyearolds which for many years was one of the big events of the fall meetings of the West Chester Racing Association at Belmont Park The cup and added money of 3000 will be donated by Clarenco H Mackey the original sponsor of th race raceMr Mr Mackay has always been a good friend of racing and his offer to renew this important fixture shows that his interest is as keen and sincere as ever That the devotees of steeplechaslng will show their appreciation of his generosity Is a certainty Careful Inquiry shows that the number of three yearolds now l elng schooled for cross countrv work is greater than it has beenln years including those when the metropolitan tracks were unhamp ¬ ered This applies to Canada as well where a num ¬ ber of prominent men new comers on the turf have taken up this end of the sport sportAnother Another feature of the meeting will be a private sweepstakes for twoyearolds maidens sit the time of entry The subscription will be 100 each and all will go to the winner J E Davis will add a handsome cup to be won twice not necessarily con secutively by the same owner ownerThis This is a new departure for hunt meetings but it is sure to serve its purpose that is to bring into active racing some of those who have done so much for amateur sport Waiting for a hunter to develop and reach an age when a certificate can be granted Is slow at best The fact that the race calls for maidens at the time of entry adds considerable to the attraction of the race It will afford a chance to try in public in a real sporting event many youngsters whose future is really to bo between the flags
