R F CARMANS ENDURANCE CANDIDATES Louisville Ky August 17 It is understood at Douglas Park where R I Carmans great hand of racers is now in training that his nominations for the Kentucky Endurance Stakes the 15000 event to be decided on October 7 the opening day of the ninedays fall meeting at Churchill Downs will be the Kentucky Derby winner Meridian The Turk and Merrv Lad Trainer Andrew Kwing rather inclines to the starting of Merry Lad in this the richest turf prize in this country He thinks Merry Lad embodies the ideal type of a longdistance horse If properly conditioned he thinks Merry Lad will run almost all day at the pace required in a fourmile race Of course Mr Carman may overrule his trainer when ht arrives at Louisville from his tour of Europe and order either Meridian or The Turk fitted for tho Endurance Stakes These two horses are to he the stars in Mr Carmans new breeding estah lisliment Naturally he would like to retire either of them to the stud with the prestige of having won the Endurance Stakes 150th Meridian and The Turk have raced like horses able to travel over a considerable distance of ground As to quality they are topnotchers in the allaged division divisionMany Many have supposed that Kounie Kelso would bu named as one of Carmans entries in the race nut that big gelding has only lieen taking walking exer ¬ cise for the last three months Even should he stand training It would he impossible to get him ready for such a bruising struggle Jlr Carman will be satisfied if Konnle Kelso can run in races at one mile and a sixteenth or less distances this fall He feels as if Bonnie Kelso now a veteran is deserving of an easy time henceforth When Konnie Kclsos turf career Is at an end he will he pensioned on the Carman Ivreeding farm farmTrainer Trainer Ewing will exert his skill to get Meridian ready for the Inaugural Handicap worth 4000 to be decided September Ifi at Douglas Park He be ¬ lieves no horse hereabouts has anything on the Ken ¬ tucky Derby winner in a race at a mile nnd a six ¬ teenth At present there is no grander looking horse alive than this son of Kroomstick He is a horse of marked Individuality There are many turfmen who think that when Meridian is not asked to concede too much weight that no racer has a license to heat him on a suitable course Like his sire Kroom ¬ stick owing to having what is known as shelly feet he cannot do his best on a hard track trackMeridian Meridian is a horse of keen Intelligence As soon as the going begins to hurt his feet he shortens his stride and thereafter makes little effort to do his best When the track has a good cushion he shines From seemingly a sulky horse he is transformed into a generous runner with the speed of the wind
