FREE LANCES CONDITION IMPROVES IMPROVESStar Star of Long Stable May Be Only Temporarily Af ¬ fected Many Interesting Items from Louisville Louisville Ky August 17 The best work at Churchill Downs or Douglas Park today went to the eredit of the twoyearold filly Cream in the stable of C C Van Meter She worked a half mile in 4S running the first three furlongs in Mr Van Meter also worked the twoyearold colt Nobby and he went a half mile in running lie first three furlongs in M Ho was paced by the threeyearold Cash on Delivery and the pair ran head and head all the way The best mild of the day was done by Nicias which ran the distance in 111 running the first half In 50 and six fur ¬ longs in 117 Gold of Ophir went six furlongs in 117 covering the first five furlongs in 10 Her stable companion Tillies Nightmare worked the same distance in llSf The latter ran the first live furlongs in 104 Trainer Peter Coyne worked two fillies Madeline and Jaffa both twoyearolds a half in 50 They went the first three furlongs in The only other work worth recording was six furlongs by Mo ¬ bile Belle in 121 and five furlongs by Jean Gray in 110 The former went the first half of her work in iil and the five furlongs in 105 while the latter ran her first half In 5r M C Prich ard has two likely fillies here He is going along slowly with them and it is probable neither of them will race before the Douglas Park meeting meetingTrainer Trainer J C Calm received an interesting lettr today from jockey Vincent Powers who Is now rid ¬ ing in France The letter was dated August 5 and wiis mailed from the Maisons Latlitte race course near Paris Powers lias been there for seven mouths and is well pleased with his new surroundings he having become skilful in riding jumpers lie is lu the employ of Eugene Wishard a brother to the celebrated American trainer Enoch Wishard The latter states that Norman Kennedy who rode so long in this country for J 11 Waiuwright and has been some six weeks In France has made up his mind to remain abroad and Powers seems to think Kennedy will do well in that country Powers first tried Germany but he did not like it nearly as woll as he does France for the reason he states that there are so many Americans in Paris On the day he wrote there were thirtysix race tracks on which races were being run in that country and thirtyJive hundred horses are in training on these courses They race all the year around but in the winter the spurt is ehielly hurdle and steeplechase races Pow ¬ ers wrote as if he had no intention of returning to America for several years yearsIn In the baud of horses Charles Howe has in train ¬ ing for Otto Stitel of St Louis are two twoyear olds that are attracting much attention m account of their near relationship to two great horses One is a brother to Jack Atkiu and the other is brother to the Suburban Handicap winner Ncalon The for ¬ mer is on the small order unlike his brother who is one of the giants of the turf in stature but Mif brother to Ncalon is a colt of fair size All of the Rowe lot are doing nicely at Douglas Park ParkFree Free Lance appeared to be much better in his stall at the Long stable at the Downs this morning The fever hail disappeared from his leg though there was still some little swelling around the tendons Dr llarthill is to look over the injured leg tomorrow and sec what lie thinks of the injury Yesterday there appeared signs of a slight bow of the tendon but today the tendons looked normal Trainer Coyne said today that if the leg continued to get better he hoped to be able to work the great threeyearold again in a wiek or ten days lie admitted however that Free Lance could be considered out of his early fall engagements engagementsW W 11 Baker L II Adair and C on M lay September 10 Mr MrFisk Fisk purchased the bay gelding from Koine Respcss for 1000 at a time when the son of Dick YVelles appeared to be hopelessly broken down but under careful training Wintergreen has returned to racing condition conditionJames James P Ross who has charge of the Kentucky Association track at Lexington and who was popular with race ollicials and turfmen will ship six few horses this fall He has cut his siring down to five head In thn spring he raced nineteen horses but a majority lacked quality and they have been sold Mr Bis sell jlid not make any slake having failed to show up as well as usual Turfmen relate a good story about Mr Schreiber and jockey A Brown who formerly rode for the Mis soul turfman Brown rode a bungling race on Jack Atkin in the formerly the property of J C Milam and now owned by W J Speirs will bo raced again ths fall at all of the Kentucky tracks As a twoyear old Labold always showed great early speed but could never be trained to stick it out In the spring trainer Speirs began to send Labold over a consider ¬ able distance of ground and the horse showed that he could hold his own with most of tho Selling platers platersLouis Louis P Docrhoefers horses are going along satis ¬ factorily in their training and are counted upon to make u good showing this fall Mary Davis is the star of the lot This sixyearold daughter of Wa ¬ tercress has not won a race this year which is hardly in keeping with her past record It is under ¬ stood that Mr Doerhoefer is entertaining an offer for some of his thoroughbreds but it is doubtful if he sells as ho seems to derive much pleasure from the sport sportFrancis Francis J Pons will enjoy the distinction of rac ¬ ing the most extensive string on the Kentucky tracks this fall He will have twentyfour horses in train ¬ ing at Douglas Park and nearly all of them are capable of winning a race when properly placed Judge Wright is the star of the lot He has been sick however and probably will not race this fall fallThomas Thomas Fortune Ryan the eastern millionaire will have his colors represented in the Prospect Stakes which will be decided at Douglas Park on Wednesday October 2 He has nominated Nelly Agnes a trim looking daughter of Monsieur de LOrme and Rock Fish a sturdy son of Elllsdale Both of these juveniles raced at Latonia Nelly Agnes ran disappointingly during tho lirst part of the meeting having bnd luck In several races but she finally graduated from the maiden class Trainer Hughes thinks that Rock Fish will prove to be a useful threeyearold Daingerfield will carry the Ryan colors in selling races over considerable dis ¬ tances of ground groundJ J W Rub May will ship his racers from Ham ¬ ilton next Monday to Lexington and upon his arrival there he will devote his attention to keying up the good horse Countless for the 4000 Inaugural Handicap one mile and a sixteenth to be decided at Douglas Park on September 10 Both trainer May and J G Greener owner of the son of The Com ¬ moner bxk for the little red horse to race better in Kentucky than he has on the Canadian tracks His racing up there has it is thought thoroughly seasoned him after a long retirement With a race or two at Lexington he will bo as thoroughly fit for the Inaugural as any horse in training It Is lielieved that the Douglas Park track which has a good cushion will just suit him and enable him to run as he did when he raced in such sparkling style as a threeyearold When at his best Count ¬ less has all of the characteristics of a superior racer He can sprint with the fastest and stay as well x Dan Lehan is not willing to concede that any horse Is bound to distance Sir Catesby when it comes to running four miles Both he and A Humphrey Jr owner of the black gelding say that Sir Catesby will surely be a starter in the S 15000 Kentucky Endurance Stakes at Churchill Downs on Monday Qctoltcr 7 They think he will at prizeAt least get a part of the rich prize At Douglas Park Nobby and Cream in the stable of C C Van Meter are training as well as any youngsters in these parts Each has a brilliant turn of speed and in their most recent trials they have shown that the can stay as well Mr Van Meter will sell out to retire to a farm in the vicinity of Bowling Green Ky He wants a snug price for this pair pairT T P Hayes is going along with sixteen horses that he has In training at Douglas Park La Mode a filly in his stable owned by J S Barbee is doing exceptionally well She has heretofore been a hard luck proposition
