FOURMILE RECORD REDUCED TO 71045 Mrs L A Livingstons Great Mare Sotemia Performs the Feat in Winning the Kentucky Endurance Stakes at Churchill Downs Louisville Ky October 7 Before an attendance estimated to exceed in numbers any former gather ¬ ing at Churchill Downs in so far as paid admissions are concerned Mrs L A Livingstons fiveyearold Hancocasbrcd mare Sotemia this afternoon won I lie rich Kentucky Endurance Stakes from six other longdistance racers in decisive fashion and added lustre to her performance by lowering all former records for the distance and establishing one that probably will long endure The impressive fashion in which she scored left no rponi for doubt that she was best She returned to the scales comparatively fresh and she undoubtedly could have continued for many more miles Colonel Holloway another asternowned horse and shipped here with Sotcmla at the eleventh hour finished u good second and Azo was third Dnval and Star Charter respectively the first and second choices came next thoroughly lieaten with Tecoae and Manager Mack following The lastnamed pair were eased up In the last half mile Manager Mack tried to iuako a runaway affair of the nice from the start and this probably had much to do with his exhausted conditU l after going three miles Ho took the Iwtd at the outset with Colonel Holloway Sotemia Duval Azi Star Char ter and Tccoae following In the order named Te ¬ coae was thoroughly done for at the end of a mile Beginning the second mile Manager Mack Increased his lead until twenty lengths separated him from Sotemia which had displaced Colonel Holloway There was no material change qmong the others all except Tecoae being under restraint Approach ¬ ing the two miles and a half inist Manager Mack began to shorten his stride perceptibly and before the tliird mile had been covered Sotemia had dis placcd him in the lead Colonel Holloway at this point moved up steadily and the riders on Azo Duval and Star Charter were also beginning to call on their mounts for their best efforts Star Charter like Manager Maik was showing signs of distress and it became evident to his backers that he was out of it when he faltered badly Colonel Holloway re1 sponded best to bis riders call and went after So ¬ tcmla but Martin who was riding tbe formcrtook matters cool y and allowed the mare to go about her business in her own stylo Gradually she drew away and won by thirty lengths A much greater distance separated COImittl Holloway from Azo for secirod Place Azo was forced to a hard drive during the last half mile to outstay Duval The latter was a prominent contender during the flrst two miles under restraint but then bowed a tendon and this eliminated him as a serious factor but he continued gamely to the end Star Charter was much dis trepsed at the finish finishThat That theformer record for the distance would be reduced was indicated in the early part of the race by the fast pace Manager Mack was forcing He went the first mile in 144 and two miles In 33Wij Tho threemile post was reached in 5254f and tbe four miles were run in 710 Had So ¬ temia been strongly urged during the last half mil it is probable that she could have gone at least two seconds faster Much credit for the mares victory is din to Jockey E Martin who handled her in faultless fashion Messenger Boys time of 714 made in winning last years Endurance Stakes was the best previous mark In a race though Lucretia Borgias 711 made against time with pacemakers and only 85 pounds up was also recognized as a record for the distance distanceSotemias Sotemias victory was followed by prolonged cheer ¬ ing from the vast assemblage and the tumult broke out afresh when the time showing that she had broken all previous records was displayed Gov ¬ ernor McCreary of Kentucky witnessed the running of the race as the guest of the stewards and after the finish was requested by the members of the Ken ¬ tucky Racing Commission to present the gold cup on their behalf to trainer Matt Feakes the repre sentative ot Mrs Livingston LivingstonGovernor Governor McCreary In presenting the gold cup said in part It was my great pleasure to be present here thirtyfour years ago when Ten Broeck the pride of the Kontucklans defeated the great California mare Mbllie McCarthy In their fourmile duel and now after all these long years when this great sport is revived I am glad to be present to see the record for1 the distance orokeu by this great mare The racing commission of Kentucky is ap ¬ pointed by tlie governor and they have asked him to present this cup to the representative of the owner of the winner This is a great country and we pro ¬ duce great horses but I must acknowledge on this occasion our sister state to the north has produced a mare which made a record here today that will be hard to beat in yearn to couie and I find additional pleasure in the fact that the winner is owned by a lady ladyTrainer Trainer Feakes in replying to Governor Mc Crearys presentation said in conclusion Mrs Livingston instructed me to bring back the gold cup and 1 ani doing so soA A more representative attendance would be hard to conceive than that which was on hand to witness the decision of the Endurance Stakes It embraced many high federal and state officials as well as officials from other states Conspicuous in the crowd were Governor McCreary United States Senator Ollle James Mayor Head of LoulBvllle and Mayor Shank of Indianapolis They all ehowed great In ¬ terest in the sport The weather was ideal being of the Indian summer brand with a gentle breeze from the southxvest southxvestOn On every hand were heard words of praise for Manager Wiun and his associates because of the beautifying touches that had been put on tho plant since the last meeting Tho infield along tho inner rail was a vista of autumnal loveliness as the result of some remarkable landscape gardening The new glass enclosed stewards stand showing everybody the interesting proceeds of weighing in after a race was run excited much favorable comment The betting was of heavy volume throughout the entire afternoon and would have been more so but for the approach of darkness which forced the officials to curtail the time between the last two races The amount wagered exceeded 163000 of which over 34000 was bet ou the Endurance Stakes StakesConsiderable Considerable interest was manifested in the races aside from the feature contest For some unes plained reason withdrawals were numerous through ¬ out the afternoon Only six went to the post in the opening dash thirteen being originally carded Co ¬ hort the favorite succiiuibid to his former stable companion Merry Lad after a brief stretch strug ¬ gle Tho great Hawthorn had a comparatively easy tiuie of it in disposing of his opposition in the sec ¬ ond race Polar Star running in much improved form gave him a chase chaseThe The consistent Grover Hughes was pitted against a formidable bafid of sprinters in the third race to which he wac conceding weight but he took their measure in handy fashion and by running five and a half furlongs in 105 he equaled the track record Helen Barbee and Little Father both considered likely factors were never formidable A bit of excitement was added to the fifth race when jockey Steele was unseated from Irish Gentleman at the start and tho riderless horso ran after his company wore them down one by one and finished five lengths in advance of Ruckhorn and TM Green which had been ttehtine it out for the purse during the entire trip The closing dash was attended by a disap pointment when Ozaiia was beaten in the last stride by CHftonlan CHftonlanTrainer Trainer Matt Feakes much elated over the suc ¬ cess of Sotemia the splendid treatment he received and the magnitude of the track here announced that he probably would bring a good string of horses here to race next season He will ship Sotemia back to Laurel tomorrow It develops that Mrs Livingston is ill at her home in New Jersey which accounts for her failure to witness Sotemias success successDuvals Duvals injury in the Endurance Stakes renders him useless for racing this season He bowed his left front tendon after going two miles It is rea ¬ sonable to suppose that had lw escaped the mishap he would have been a formidable contender for honors at the ond ondDr Dr H Mucias and Mis Macias came here from Mexico City to witness the running of the Endur ¬ ance Stakes StakesAfter After unseating jockey Steele Irish Gentleman ran riderless for three miles before he couldd be caught He gave a remarkable exhibition of speed by covering the first two uiUes in 313 313Manager Manager Matt J Wiun was highly elated over th success attending the opening and was immensely pleased with the running of the Endurance Stakes Mr Wiun ultimately hopes to make the race the greatest in this country and is aiming to increase its monetary value until the winners portion will reach 50000 Todays race was worth 7435 net to the winner besides the 1000 gold cup A cupA big delegation of Chicagoans came down to wit ¬ ness the race headed by Smiley Corbett The latter stated that there is much rejoicing over the prospective resumption of racing near Chicago and that tbe Porter lud track will not bo lacking in patronage fraternityOn from the Chicago sporting
