CONFIDENCE IS UNSHAKEN LOUISVILLE TRAINERS STAND BY HAWTHORN AFTER OTHER DERBY CANDIDATES WORK Delegation Visits Lexington and Views Trials of ofHelios Helios and Foundation Without Changing Opinion Opinionas as to Outcome of Coming Contest Louisville Ky April 15 A number of local trainers liave returned from Lexington after looking over the candidates in training there that are elig ¬ ible to race in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill liiwns on Saturday Mar 10 They were fortunate hi Seeing Helios and Foundation the Lexington hopes for the race work a mile as the track there was in fairly good condition Helios went the dis ¬ tance hi 144 while Foundation went a mile two fifths of a second faster Of the two horses the local experts cein to prefer Foundation so far as appearance goes as Helios so they say seemed to be tr bit drawn This is however about as he blriked in one or two of his good races last season Mill it may be that he will race as well in this condition as an ordinary horse does when seemingly more robust The local contingency however un ¬ hesitatingly expressed the opinion that they preferred Hawthorn to either of the Lexington threeyearolds and their visit was fruitless insofar as affecting their opinion that C F Buschemeyers crack geld ing will be the next Kentucky Derby winner winnerHawthorn Hawthorn day in and day out at the Downs be ¬ comes even a greater favorite for this event He Is such a gixwl doer and the fact that he will only extend himself fully when he has something to run against adds still deeper to the impression that he will not only go the Derby route but that he will probably run the distance faster than any horse heretofore has in winning ibis classic event He works In spots running an eighth and loafing an eighth and this is a nre sign of a good stayer indicating as it does that bekeeps himself within hounds and always has something left leftTill Till colored man who rides him in work is named Uesse Bnllard and one season he rode several good riir w1iHe littlife employ of G M1 tytriiuv rHe MIOII got too heavy to ride ht a moderate scale of weights and has since devoted his time to exercising horses There is no better rider In this line at the Downs He weighs close to 130 pounds but the big gelding shoulders his colored rider in his trials as if ho was a featherweight It Is likely that before the Derby is run and the great son of Hastings is given his final trial trainer Trevey will send him the Derby route under the guidance of jockey Loft us who can ride him at his exact Derby weight which will be 114 pounds If Trevev does conclude to set Hawthorn down under such a jockey n rid ridwith with track conditions good it is confidently be ¬ lieved by horsemen here that Hawthorn will throw in the shade any Derby trial ever worked on this track threeyearoldG by any threeyearold G W Inngdons Kentucky Derby candidate His Majesty is a blockilybnilt colt and stands a shade ovpr 15 hands 2 Inches high To some horsemen he would appear to be a fine model foK a three yearold but a good English jiidge would call the son of Ogden a bit lieefy He is apparently quite high In tiesh but with hard training he may he Britten ready to run in the rich stake He is surely a remarkably bred colt as his sire and the sire of his dam and his granddam arc all FUtnrlty winners winnersThe The Kentucky Handicap to which the Douglas Park Jockey Club has so liberally added 10000 and which is set for the opening day of the meeting at that track on Monday May 20 continues to arouse well nigh as much interest as Churchill Downs DerbyDoubtless big event the Kentucky Derby Doubtless in addition to all the older stars of the turf including the three great foitryearolds The Manager Froglegs and Buckhorn all the stars of the Derby will face the barrier in this rich event which will be one of the richest races run on the American turf during 113 The distance of this vent is the same as the Kentucky Derby one mile and a quarter and it may be that with a good track all Kentucky records for this distance will be low ¬ ered ly the winner winnerEverything Everything Is shaping up well for successful rac ¬ ing at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park this spring Those iwo meetings will undoubtedly be tlie greatest ever given in Kentucky and will add materially to Hie turf history of this state which owes miieir of its distinction to its thoroughbred running horses Beginning with the 10th of May Louisville will be to America what Epsom Downs and Ascot are to England Though muddy conditions still prevailed at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park yesterday at the former plant there was a hard bottom to the course and as a result horses worked surprisingly well goingHawthorn through the wet going Hawthorn was only cantered around the paths of the grounds and was not taken on the track at ill by trainer Trevey It is likely he will do little more track work Iwfore the middle of the week owing to his superb condition A slight let ¬ up will do him no harm Prince Herinis another Derby candidate worked a half In 50 and Baron di Kalb which is also among the eligible for the big race went a half in 51 The Kentucky Oaks candidate Christmas Star in Catesby AVoodfords stable cantered six furlongs in 124 and was ac ¬ companied in her work bv the brother to Roselteii Peter Grimm The ers were holding off for fast going that is expected tomorrow or next day dayThe The Derby favorite Hawthorn was asked to go fhree furlongs lie covered the distance in 7 going the last eighth In 12f
