FRENCH METHOD RATHER CRUDE The muttiel machines being used at the Lexington track are the property of the Latonia Jockey Club having been loaned to the Kentucky Association by General Manager Ilachmeister Four of them are of a new type manufactured here in Cincinnati and they worked well Speaking alioiit machine they were telling in Lexington on the oj ening day of a good joke on one of the old standbys iir racing The joke was on O IE Cheiiault the veteran horse man and director of the Kentucky Association aud is too good to keep It seems that last winter the Kentucky Association not being Hush with moiiiv didnt like to buy the miitucl machines outright It would entail too much of an outlay of money The directors were considering the matter when it occurred to Mr Cheiiault to try and get some 1111 chines abroad and lie did so unbeknown to the other members of the board Mr Chenault cabl d to Gene Leigh who is in Paris to buy him t n parimutuel machines in that country and to ship them by fast express to him at Lexington Leigh followed instructions and in duo time the machines arrived Mr Chenault intended to surprise the other members of the lK ard by informing them thit Lexington would have the latest make of machine direct from France the home of the mutuels Then Mr Chenault repaired to open the machines and here is where he was given quite a surprise Much to his astonishment and chagrin Mr Clicuault found the machines were nothing more or less than a large board with places on which to fasten bunches of tickets the machines being exact prototypes of the combination machine used at Latonia It is also recorded that the directors were cruel enough to make Mr Chenault pay the expresttige back to France on the machines Cincinnati Enquirer
