DONERAIL WINS THE FASTEST KENTUCKY DERBY ON RECORD RECORDThirty Thirty Thousand Persons See an Outsider in the Betting Defeat Ten Point the Favorite by a Narrow Margin in Churchill Downs Historic Fixture Louisville Kv May 10 The uncertainty of horse racing that element which makes the greatest of all outot doois sports so fascinating was never more clearly demonstrated than at Churchill Downs this afternoon when Donerail won the thirtyninth Ken ¬ tucky Derby in 204 the fastest time in which any mile and a quarter was ever run over this famous old battle ground of the thoroughbreds and at odds of 11 15 to 1 the longest pric for any winner of this classic which had its inaugural in 187 187Tin Tin race was a thrilling spectacle and the thirty thousand or so f people ivlio tilled the stands to overflowing packed the porches of the clubhouse and the rrnt of the parimntiiel inclosure swarmed over the lawns and jammed against th rails from tilt intleld which was free and looked much colt Ten Ioint mounted by the 1acitie Vast rider Biixton was th heavily sup ¬ ported favorite of the eight starters and he went out to set the pace running from two to thvee lengths in advance of diaries W McKennas lx x ingtonbred owned and trained colt Foundation vith Lofms as his pilot and II K Knnpps Ken ¬ tuckybred but New Yorkowneil colt Yankee No ¬ tions with Glass up miming close jdongside until they were well into the backstrctca Foundation and Yankee Notions there began moving up ami they made the turn out of the backstrctfh and ended the i first mile less than two lengths behind thu leader and coming fast heads apart Turning into the homestretch Ioftus thought that he would go through along the rail and take the lead from Ten Point but Ituxton quickly scenting the move closed in causing Foundation to take back a bit and there were shouts of Oh Oh from the hrong for it seemed as if Ten Point was about to foul the colt to which nearly all of the Blue Grass country had pinned its faith and which was a heavy second choice in the betting The interference was trivial so much so that 110 official notide was taken of it and decidedly not enough to cause any one to say that the race was not truly run Here Yankee Notions moved into second place and the tluw were only half lengths apart with T T Weaver Latouiatrained tilly Gowell ridden by jockey Me Cabe coming fast with Thomas P Hayes Lexing ¬ tonbred owned and trained colt Donerail at her heels Once straightened out in the stretch Done rail came steadily gamely and certainly passing the four flying leaders all hard ridden and under the whip one by one until in the closing strides of a groat race he sot to the finishing line half a length in advance of Ten Point while Gowell rushed into third place a length and a half away and t head in front of Foundation Yankee Notions was tifth only a neck back and live lengths before J O Keenes Lexingtonowned colt Lord Marshall ridden by jockey 15 Stcele and not really tit for so gruell ¬ ing a race The Louisville representative Jimmie Jill owned by Louis Doerhoefer and Shelby West and piloted by Uorel was seventh eight lengths back and fifteen lengths in front of John W Schorrs Memphis gelding Leochares ridden by Peak n nThe The winner is a son of the English stallion McGee and the American mare Algie M by Hanover and comes from the family which produced Irish Lad Advance Guard and other good race horses over a route He was bred by Mr Hayes who now has the dam at his farm in Fayette county near the station on the Cincinnati Southern railroad from which he got his name Donerail Algie M was a good race mare and she is the dam also of bir Cates by and the twoyearold Punch liowl recently sold to E W Heffner of Sheepshcad Bay by Mr Hays for S4 000 McGee the sire of the winner was brought to America in 1001 by Edward Corrigan the veteran turfman who retired from racing some time ago and is now a contractor in Kansas City When Mr Corrigan disposed of his breeding estab ¬ lishment in 1508 Charles W Moore the owner ot Mere Hill Stud which Is located on the Newtown road near Lexington bought McGee and has since been mating him with his good mares He has now several line looking yearlings by Mm MmMr Mr Hayes said that he did not have a wager en his horse It was good enough to have the honor of breeding owning and training a winner of the Kentucky Derby he said I prize this victory more than any other achievement in my career as a turfman Haves is a modest man who usually wears a smile and lias hundreds of friends many of whom hands of Gov Jas V McCreary the lloral bouquet he was one proud voting man The presentation was made in the presence of the stewards Messrs Chas F Grainger President of the New Louisville Jockey Club Matt J Winn General Manager of Churchill Downs and former Judge Chas F Price the placing amlgcvs Messrs William II Shelley Harry Bricvogel and Edward Jasper and Starter Mars Cassidy who had dispatched the tlelds with his usual expertness The governor said to Goose GooseSuccess Success in all walks of life counts for every ¬ thing whether it be you are statesman or president todav vou are the premier jockey for you have won the greatest race in Kentucky Jockey Goose thanked the governor and said in reply I am the proudest boy in the country at this moment for 1 would have rather won this race than any other for I know this is the greatest race In Ken nitlev and I am Kentucky born The presentation speech was a most inspiring one and the governor and the jockey were loudly cheered at their way to and from the machines and the cashiers It was a busy mart of speculation and even before the lirst race was run it was predicted by Eugene Elrod and his experienced crew that the handle for tlie day would be larger than on any Derby day in the past or for that matter in the history of Kentucky It was 272771 There were thirty machines in the ring and one In the clubhouse There were three machines for 25 tickets three for 10 tickets seven for 5 tickets and eighteen for 2 tickets ticketsNow Now as to the other races Florence Roberts was best of tlie thirteen sprinters that went to the post for the opening race and won by a neck in a drive with Iady Lightning after leading all the way They were about equal choices in the estima ¬ tion of tlie public publicThe The second race produced a stirring finish and at the same time a double for jockey Loftus who hustled Theodorita up in time to nose out Birdie Williams which did the leading after the first couple of strides Aunt than the American record as the time for the half mile This of course was an impossibility for these horses over this track lint no correction was made tlie stewards deciding after the mistake had airing for Sprite the fouryearold half sister to Yankee No ¬ tions She was a 1 to 2 choice in the letting and won with plenty to spare Sebago withstood the challenge of Helen Barbee and got second place in a drive driveThe The fifth race went to Yandergrift a likely look ¬ ing racing tool from the stable of John W Schorr lie won handily from a lot of good ones with Francis second and Mac third thirdStrenuous Strenuous won the closing race gettin last eighth of a mile He had been held in reserve1 and was going away at the finish with Melton Street sivond and Caidtan Bravo third It was
