TIMELY GOSSIP FROM KENTUCKY. Louisville. Ky., Oetolier 1. Irince Eugene, which probably will carry the colors of Harry Payne Whitney in tlie Kentucky Endurance Stakes, has worked a milt: and a half in 2:31 iu preparation for his four-mile engagement. The son of Hamburg seems to he going along well and trainer Goldhlatt says, lie is a sure starter. J. Kederis will ride him. Trainer J. I. Mayberry thinks Frederick Johnsons Cock o the Walk needs little special preparation for the four-mile race. He probably will send hlin a couple of miles at a fairly good pace during the last of the week and. with a blow-out next Monday or Tuesday, he thinks tlie son of Peep oDay will lie ready, to do himself credit over the long course in the rich stake at Churchill Downs next Wednesday. Jockey J. Glass is here to ride the colt. Pandorlna, Mrs. L. A. Livingstons probable starter, and Mission, which will carry A. Belmonts colors in the race, are expected here in a day o-two. Many notables in the turf world from all over America have already filed with Treasurer II. C. Applegate requests reservations for boxes both iu the clubhouse anil grandstand and the attendance of visiting turfmen bids fair to be greater this autumn than ever before iu the history of fall racing in this state. Everything is in readiness at tin- Downs for the opening and not even the smallest detail has been overlooked bv the men left here in charge by .Manager M. .1. Winn. While at Lexington Sunday In company with trainer CHIT Hamilton and jockey J. Loftus, E. H. Bradley tried out a munlier of his yearlings over his private training track at Idle Hour Farm. The course over which lie worketl the youngsters runs fourteen Inches down hill in the first eighth and thirty inches up hill in the last eighth. Hie bay lilly by Helmet Ella Smith worketl fastest of all. She went a tpiarter in 23, while the chestnut colt by Ciinard Pliilistia. the chestnut filly by Cunartl Melton Mowlray and the chestnut filly by Cunartl Black Mary worketl In 23. Tlie hay lilly by Cunartl Minnie Adams went a quarter iu 23 Vf. and the brown colt by Cunartl Dorset Flower went the distance in 23. Tlie bay filly by St. Savin Sister Caroline went a tpiarter in 24. as did the bay colt by Helmet Frogmore. The latter Is regarded by Mr. Bradley as the pick of all his yearlings this season. He thinks lie may be a little late in coming to his best form as a youngster, but be believes he will be out of the greatest two-year-olds trained in 1914. J. W. Schorrs yearlings are still at the Bradley farm and trainer Schorr went there last Sunday and worked them a bit. He is much pleased with the collection, especially with the half-brother to Old Rosebud and he expects several others in tlie band of eleven to come to hand earl- Al Austin is a late arrival here. He has but one horse, the two-year-old Indolence, recently purchased from T. P. Hayes. Austin expects to secure several horses to take along with Indolence to Juarez for tlie coming winter season of racing there. Thaka, which won the opening race at Douglas Park Monday for George J. Long, is one of the youngsters which trainer W. S. Hopkins, has had in liis cart since last spring. She looks like a lilly that will continue to improve and appears to be of the sort that will like a considerable distance of ground. She is a half-sister to the famous Manuel, winner of the Kentucky Derby of 1800. Isabelle Valle; which ran third in tlie race won by Thaka, is the first of the get of . English Lad. winner of the Chicago and St. Louis Derbys of 1004. to race. This youngster is named for a society belle of St. Louis, who was wedded last Saturday to jiu English lord, and her wedding was oue of the leading society events of the fall in that city. This daughter of English Lad is out of Bessie Welles, by Dick Welles, and, odd to note, the latter is out of Bessie Spahr, the dam of Christinas Eve, which split Thaka and Isabelle Valle in the race. Two two-year-olds that E. J. OConnell brought here from Canada for S. N. Ilohnan are named Tijola ami Hip Van Winkle. The former is a son of the great race horse, Celt, and both are regarded as promising maidens. Belloe. which won for James MacManus at Douglas Park Monday, cost that turfman 00 as a yearling, anil lie bought OHagan out of the same sale for 75. They are both by Oddfellow.
