EQUALS AMERICAN RECORD LEOCHARES DUPLICATES IRON MASKS RECENT FEAT OF THREE-QUARTERS IN 1:101. Schorr Racer Is Returned Winner of Handicap at Douglas Park, While Iron Mask Loses Second Placo to Helios.. Louisville, Ky., October 3. John W. Schorrs three-year-old Broomstick fielding. Leochatos, equaled the American record for three-quarters of a mile at Douglas Park this afternoon when lie ran the distance in 1:10 if, in winning the handicap that featured todays card. Helios nnished in second place and Iron .Mask, which, in a former essay, had established the mark of 1:10. landed third. Leoehares was in the best form of his career this afternoon, and had lie been forced to do so, he might have run the three-quarters in 1:10. lie showed extreme speed when fully settled in his stride after the lirst quarter anil onened a commanding I lead. Morel. His rider, had htm well in hand during the stretch racing and eased him up in the linal sixteenth. Iron Mask would have been closer .up hut for Interference that he suffered as a consequence of liaving an inside post position. He made a game cffi.rt, but the 132 pounds he was shouldering hail its effect in the linal drive and he succumbed to Helios in the last sixteenth for SLt-oud money. The Camden sprinter was badly outpaced for three furlongs, but, under good handling, saved much ground and linished stoutly. Helen Barbee, Theresa Gill and lan Zareta were contenders for tlie lirst half mile only. Ideal weather and the excellent card were magnets in drawing the largest attendance r the season to Douglas lark. Speculation showed a big increase and corresponded in volume with the best day of the meeting. The racing was spirited with several close liuishes. The finish in the second race was particularly close and the public remained in doubt as to the winner until the ollicial nlacing was displayed. Counterpart, owned by F. J. Pons, got the .verdict over Wiiitcrgrecn. with Lucille Allen third., "mioses sepnTaTed the trio. The Pons establishment viatle it a double for the day when Grosvenor finished lirst in the fifth ir.ee. Tlie closing dash resulted in a hard fought contest between T. AI. Green and Donne Chance, with tlie former just lasting to win. The official time for the race was reconleil as 1:44, but according to many watches in the hands of reliable timers the mile ai.d a sixteenth was run in 1:45. Tlie longest priced winner of the meeting developed in the opening dash when the Mexiean-owued The-odorita beat a fairly good band of juvenile tillies, Willi Gipsy Love second and Tomboy third. Dirdie Williams and Darhara Lane were tlie betting choices for the race, hut the latter became involved in a jam and the former quit badly after showing high speed for half a mile. Waterbass. an overwhelming favorite made good in handy fashion in the third race. Florin and Clax-onette fought it out for second place, which the lirst named got in the last stride. Considerable regret was manifested today when it became known that the crack eastern colt. Cock o the Walk, would not be among the starters in tlie Kentucky Endurance Stakes, four miles, to be run on October S, tlie opening day at Churchill Downs. Trainer John 1. Mayberry. who Is In charge of the colt, made the announcement today that lie would not be a starter and wired owner Frederick Johnson to that effect. After working last Wednesday, Cock o the Walks left foreleg developed a suspicious tilling and trainer Maylierry at once lecided to suspend the training of the colt. May-berry believes that with good care. Cock o the Walk can be brought around during the winter so that next season he will again show the good form that lie did this season, but that to prepare him further with a view of starling him in the four-mile race next Wednesday would be equivalent to inviting ids iiennanent breakdown. There is a vast deal of interest in the outcome of the Louisville Cup, to be run tomorrow as the feature of the closing days card at Douglas Park. It is expected that all those carded in the overnight entries, with the jiossible exception of Absconder, will go to the post and opinion seems to he greatly divided as to tlie probable winner. An immense attendance is expected to witness the race. All of the lixes have been sold, as has much of the reserved section of the grandstand. Jefferson Livingston, owner of the good band of racers trained by Mose Goldblatt, paid his first visit to the Douglas Park track today and was greatly surprised at the magnitude and thorough equipment of the plant, lie was disappointed in iron Masks failure to repeat bis winning performance of tlie opening day. Mr. Livingston will remain over until tomorrow night, when he will depart on a business trip. He plans to return to Louisville ntxt week to witness tlie runniug of the Kentucky Endurance Stakes. Major Duncan, U. S. A., in charge of the troops from Fort Thomas that are here to participate in the Perry Centennial celebration, was an interested visitor and discussed witli Manager Ilachmeister the feasibility of carding an event at Latonia that would afford some of Uncle Sams soldiers an opportunity of displaying their riding skill. Mr. Ilachmeister looks with favor on the Idea. Counterpart and Waterbass, tlie two-horse combination, yielded $."1.1.25 for . Lcochares. Grosvenor and T. M. Green, the three-horse, paid 0.30. Capt. .1. Dreckenridge Viley. proprietor of Stonewall Farm, at .Midway. Ky., lias decided to sell his four yearlings at tlie sale to be held during tlie Latonia meeting this fall. Capt. Viley has two colts by St. Savin and a filly and a colt by Cesarion. They arc out of Lucasta, Doblnette. Linora and Ruth Parish. Kay Speiice brought three horses here besides his crack two-year-old.
