TURBULENT TIME AT HILLCREST. Eighth Race Declared Off Because of Refusal of Rioting Crowd to Clear Course. Toronto, Ont., October 3. There were some ex-, traordinary happenings at Hillercst Park today. During the running of the seventh race, Johnny Wise, the leader, fell at the eastern bend and live other horses Euterpe, Igloo, Star Ashland, Lou Lanier and Excalibur fell over him and each other. The only two that stood Up were Miss Menard and Red River. After the fallen jockeys had been carried off or had limped away, Johnny Wise was remounted by a stalde boy and, though bleeding freely from the nostrils, circled the track in a claim for third money. The judges, however, hung out only the numbers of Miss Menard and Red River. Then a shouting, gesticulating crowd invaded the track and demanded that third money be awarded to Johnny Wise or tlie raee be declared off. In spite of the efforts of the police, they refused to leave the course, though the horses had meanwhile gone to the post for the eightli and linal race. It was then, decided to declare off this race and it was further announced that the money on all show tickets for the seventh race would he refunded. The crowd broke up reluctantly. .Tockev Chappell. who rode Johnny Wise, was the only rider at all seriously hurt. He was taken to the hospital suffering from injuries about tlie head. Chappell was re-siMinsible for the accident. Ills mount bled while coming up the stretch in the first two furlongs, but lie iiersisted iu riding him on. The horse choked and smothered and naturally went down on the bend. It was almost a miracle that some one was not killed. The races will continue as usual tomorrow. The olliclals are investigating a charge that jockey V. Adams was approached to pull Nila in the fourth race. According to report, he refused to do so and Informed his employer. J. IT. Moody, who complained to the judges. Nila had a rough passage iu the race and punishment Is in prospect for somebody.
