HANDICAP WELL CONTESTED COLONEL COOK IS FIRST IN EXCITING RACE AT LAUREL TRACK. All of the Contestants Appeared to Havo Winning Chance at One Time or Another El Bart Wins Chevy Chase Steeplechase, Baltimore, Md., October 22. Joseph E. Wideuers El Hart captured the Chevy Chase Steeplechase at Laurel this afternoon after one of the most spectacular races through the held ever witnessed at this course. It was a real horse race from start to lluish. At one time or another every starter appeared, to have a chance of winning and it was not until the Hat was reached that lil Hart loomed up as the probable winner. The conditions of the race wire altered so as to permit amatiur riders to have a leg up and Lieut. Fred Alpers had the mount on Robert L. Jerrys The Evader. L. Navarre ruled favorite and Keating did not give him any too well judged a ride. lie tool: the horse back several times and when he let him down in the final dash, L. Navarre was exhausted. On the turn for home, Maltbie, i mining In Bayard Tucicnnans colors, looked all over the winner, hut HI itart closed with a splendid burst of speed and won handily. .Maltbie held L. Navarre safe at the linish. though the latter was coming again. A h:indi-ip at oae mile and a sixteenth was the best betting raiv of the day. There were seven starters, with Ringiiug ruling hrst choice. Every contestant was well supported, however, and the race was a spirited one all the way. A furlong from the linish all except l.ob K. appeared to have a winning chance. A hundred yards from the end, it looked like Barnegats race, but Colonel Cook, under a hustling ride, came along and snatched the victory from the Watkins racer. Al West on and Captain W. F. Presgruve have just returned from a visit lo It. W. Waldens farm at .Mlddleburg. lid. They found a particularly good looking lot of youngsters and there were two that attracted special attention. One is a son of Bryn Mawr and the other a sou of Chilton, and if they mraw to their looks they should be among the top-: uotcliers next season, .The Irish yearlings that were imported to race forT1Qjn,as..Clyde are going along well at iimllco and lmveshmvn some impressive moves. .lockey Uutwe.ll has been engaged to do the riding for August Helmont for the rest of the present meeting. Tommy Mclaggart. the regular stable jockey, having been suspended. John O. Talbott has sent Jawbone to his New .Tcr-Eoy farm and he will bo gelded and turned out for the winter. Mouocaey. Frank Hudson and the others at the farm will be taken up and shipped to Charles-ion. Lawrence and Comstock will ship a number of yearlings to Charleston from their farm at Lincoln, Cal. They an; all the get of Salvation and will be handled bv A. G. Hlakeley. Colors was bid up from 00 to 05 by I. Ford and was retained by his owner. Archie Zlmmcr, who has teen resting his horses at Havre de Grace since the close of that meeting, moved them over to Iimlico today. He probably will not race them during the coming winter.
