NOVELTY IN RACING AT NEWMARKET. Concerning a feature that evoked considerable Interest and amusement at the Newmarket Houghton meeting. Loudon Sportsman of October -51, said: "Until yesterday there had not been a race for the Cup at Newmarket since 1SSC. the winner on hat occasion being the Duke of Beauforts Forio. The event has generally ended in a walk-over, and when Lord Cadogan decided to throw down the gauntlet to Sterifast with Marco Eraser, considerable Interest was manifested. Th race is run over the course known as the Ditch In," distance two miles and 118 yards, and finished at the top of the town, where the Cambridgeshire in bygone days used Jo finish. All the stauds have been pulled down mid the original winning post alone remains. It was a quaint experience, and practically the whole of the jnemlters of the Jockey Club were present to witness it. There was no number lioard and a man in a cart held aloft the numbers, but no jockeys were given. The two Jockeys were Maker and AVootlon. There was no belting ring, but half a mile away, at the Rowley .Mile stand, the bookmakers expressed their willingness to trade if backers would lay 33 to 1 on Lord Derbys crack. The course was not railed or roped off, and two mounted policemen continually requested the people lo move further back, nlease. so that Ihe bulge can see. Jockeys on their hacks were In a little group. As anticipated, Stedfast had an easy task."
