MARYLAND RACING CONTINUES TO PROSPER : I, While there was less racing by six days in Maryland this year than in 1012 the sport flourished as never before In that locality. A new record was made in the amount of money distributed among owners of racing stables, the patronage of the various meetings was greater than ever and the racing itself was conducted on a plane that left little to be desired. The most important development of the season was the substitution of the pari-mntuels for the bookmakers at Pimlico and other tracks under the jurisdiction of the Baltimore County Racing Commission, In accordance with the decision reached last year by that governing body to insist upon such a change this season. The patrons of Pimlico have taken kindly to the innovation. Another important happening was a change In the .controlling ownership of the Laurel track, which was built iu 1011 by H. D. Brown and his associates. This property, following a dispute with the Jockey Cluli that was carried to the courts, passed into the possession of a syndicate headed by James Butler, of New York, well and favorably known to horsemen by reason of ills connection with racing as the owner of the Empire City track at Yonkers, N. Y. Matt J. Winn, who has scored numerous successes in a managerial capacity at various American race tracks, was installed as manager at Laurel and conducted the affairs of the course to such advantage this season that Laurel is finally in a fair way to fill the void left vieant by the suspension of racing at Benning, which was one of the objects in view when the track was built. There lias liecn considerable agitation against bookmaking in Maryland and It is expected that an attempt will lie made to legislate against the bookmakers during the biennial session of the Maryland legislature the coining winter. It is intimated that an effort will be made to pass a law providing for the creation of a state commission to govern all racing within the state, with the parl-mutuels as the only legal means of speculation. The general results of the Maryland racing season are summarized in the subjoined tabulation: . 2 ? 2s 2 3 3 53 33 o ? b3 -g 3h 3 5g 3g g gg SgSEp 7 z S U t -5- Iff Sff gn gfio Track and Meeting. : 3 OH c: o g 3 6 o o a 3 r o . a : : 3 i ? : . .. : : g : ? : : : : : : ?
