RACING IS AGAIN SPIRITED HESTER PSYNNE IS RETURNED WINNER OF FEATURE RACE AT NORFOLK. Smirk Gives Display of Unruliness and Association Refunds Money Wagered on Her After She Is Withdrawn at the Post. Norfolk, Va., November 24 A well-balanced program furnished stirring sport at the Jamestowa Jockey Clubs track this afternoon. The finishes in ail but the opening race found the winners under hard drives to win by small margins and in four of the live races less than a length separated the-first two. The program was a well-balanced one and had as a feature the Ladies Purse, a dash of six furlongs for all ages. Ten of the eleven carded left the paddock for the post, but only nine succeeded in reaching there. Directly Smirk got out of the paddock she began to whirl and buck jump and in several of her lunges she unseated her rider, C. Jackson. When it became evident that it was impossible for her rider to stay on the mare the stewards sensibly ordered Smirks withdrawal. She was led back to the paddock and the starter was given the bell to send the field away without her. The association refunded what wagers had been made on Smirk. The winner turned up in Hester Pryniie, which beat Cheroke?e Rose II. half a length after a long and hard stretcch drive. Brynary was third, a neck in advance of the long shot, W. W. Clark. The latter ran a smashing good race. It was a close thing ltetween Mate and Thelraa J. in the third race and the former got the decision by the smallest of margins. Northerner was heavily supported and went to the post a 1 to 2 favorite. He was off slowly and moved up fast on the back-stretch, but in the final furlong he weakened and just lasted long enough to withstand Underrovers challenge for third place. It was ladies day and a tremendous gathering turned out. It was the last of these occasions for this meeting and standing room was at a premium. Twenty-five books were again in line and speculation was keen. Jockey Buxton departed for Charleston last night in response to a telegram "from -J. L. Holland, for whom lie will ride this winter. Tom Brown purchased from J. W. May on Saturday the two-year-old Bulgarian. Brown has schooled the ARan-a-Dale colt, Farmer Boy, through the field aridMie-hasuhad several offers for the colt. He will proljably dispose of him to Harry Rites. John P. Maybcrry is suffering with a severe attack of tonsil it Is and was unable to be at the course today. J. W. May and Kimball Patterson left for Charleston Saturday night with their stables. The Bever-wyck Stable is due to leave for Palmetto Park on Wednesday. W. Weikert has purchased the two-year-old Sir Caledore from the Oncck Stable and turned the colt over to Willie Shields to train.
