DECISION ON A BREEDING QUESTION. It will bo remembered that a question recently arose as to who was to be recognized as the breeder of Castalla, and. therefore, entitled to the S125, for which the conditions of the Avondale Stakes provided. After a discussion lasting an hour and a half, the committee of the Avondale Jockey Club decided: "That the breeder of Castalla he defined as the owner who selects or chooses the sire to mate with the mare." This ruling is iu distinct opposition to that of the Australian Jockey Club, which provides that "the owner of the dam of the winner at the date of the foaling shall be deemed to be the breeder of the winner." The matter is, however, almost sure to be referred to the New Zealand Conference, and it will be interesting to see what view that authority adopts. Sydney Referee.
