Your definition of "within a year" is abstractly correct. But In the case in point a bet was made December 4 that Briar Path had not won two races within a year. Unless there was some understanding to the contrary, the meaning of that bet would be held to be that she had not won two races within a year of December 4, 1913. And she had not.
