MANGANESE TAKES BLARNEYS MEASURE. Shows His Customary Speed and Fails to Quit in Running of Vera Cruz Handicap. El Paso, Tex., December 14. Grand sport Was enjoyed by the big crowd that journeyed over to Juarez to witness this afternoons racing. The Vera Cruz Handicap, for two-year-olds, live and one-half furlongs, featured the card. Blarney, the favorite, met witli defeat by Manganese, which has shown keen soeed in all his races, but was inclined to quit until today. He went to the front as usual and stood a drive in game fashion. Blarney made a futile effort to cut down his lead in the stretch. Emerald Gem did not have the best of racing luck, as she was unfortunate In being shut off right after tin? start. She made up quite a bit of ground in game fashion. Doc Allen, the oldest thoroughbred in training at the Juarez track, beat the younger horses opposed to him in the fifth race, a five-furlong sprint. He ran the distance in fast time. Jockey B. Mentry was granted a license today and will be seen in the saddle in the near future. He is under contract to J. Ilumbrecht. Henry McDaniel lias signed a contract to train for Bobert Davles, of Toronto, and will report for duty January 15 at Toronto. -Mr. McDaniel will trv to sell the horses he is racing here at private sale and if he cannot dispose of them in that manner, he will offer them at auction.
