! : : : RACING OF THE SECOND FILLY WINNER OF THE LATONIA DERBY 4, In the division of three-year-old fillies of 1913, tho western crack, Gowell, did not win as manv races as her speedy eastern rival, Flying Fairy, but, as a rule, she faced sterner competition in her races. It might be fairly questionable whether at even weights she could defeat Flying Fairy up to a mile, but at longer distances she was almost certainly the better of the two and in the Latonia Derby proved herself a true stayer. Since her introduction to racing when a two-year-old. Gowell has known little of the pleasure of devouring the oats of idleness while the regular spring, summer and autumn campaigns were in progress. At that age she took part in thirty-four races, quite sufficient to put finished to the career of the average two-year-old. But she is a creature of steel and whipcord and, standing that arduous experience nobly came out better than ever this year and withstood the rigors of another stiff campaign spler.didlv. -is a two-year-old she ripened slowly and had taken part in twelve races before she finally managed to win one. In all at that age she won seven races, of which, three were stakes. These were tho Beech-mont Makes at Douglas Park, September 21, 1912, in which, carrying 109 pounds, she ran five and a half iiirlongs In 1:00 and won by a length: Benanet, 95 pounds, was second with Smoke House, 105 third, and eight more unplaced: the Golden Rod Stakes at Churchill Downs October 10, in which, with 107 pounds up, she won by a neck from Nobby at three-quarters of a mile in 1:13. Nobby carried 105 pounds and the third horse was this years Kentucky Derby winner, Donerail, carrying 103. Five other aspirants were unplaced: the Hosedale Stakes at Latonia October 23, distance five and a half furlongs, in which she took up 112 pounds and wen by eight lengths over a heavy track in 1:10, Star of Danube. 10S pounds, iinishing, second and Donerail. 1C9. third again. This was a selling race of the net value of 1,530 and, a.ter it was over, the Ally was bid up to ,005 mote than her selling price of ,400, so her victory actually brought a loss of 5 to her owner. Her last winning race that year was for a purse at five and a naif furlongs over the Latcnia track in which she gave Kleburne eleven pounds and a beating in such fast aS 1:05" sllu carr-vniS 111 pounds to 100 on Kleburne and winning by a neck, with Star of Danube bird Gowells first essay this year was not a success. This was in a purse race for threc-vcar-old fillies of three-quarters of a mile at the Lexington spring meeting April 20, in which she ran fourth to The Widow Moou, Daisy Piatt and Floral Park In 1:15 on a heavy track. The race was beneficial to her. Three days later she started in the Ashland Oaks at a mile over a heavy track. Each of the six contestants carried 117 pounds. The Widow Moon was the favorite at 11 to 10, but Gowell raced Into the lead on tho last turn and won by three lengths, with tho favorite second and Baliyshe a bad third. She was not so fortunate in the Blue Grass Stakes at a mile and an eighth., This race was run Mav 3, and third to Foundation and Donerail was her share. It was a fast run race, the distance being covered in 1:51 All carried regulation stake weights and Foundation, witli his 122 pounds up, was certainly a good colt that day. in the Camden Handicap at a mile and a quarter, she was a good third to Flora Fina and Manager Mack in 2:05. The two Allies each carried 103 pounds and Manager Mack 107. Any Port Donerail and J-ord Marshall ran unplaced. Taken from Lexington to Louisville her next start was in the Kentucky Derby, in which she ran a grand race and. Iinishing a close up third to Donerail and Ten Point, had Foundation, Yankee Notions, Lord Marshall, Jimmie Gill and Lcochares behind her. Only once before had a hlly ran third in the Kentucky Derby and that was in the year previous when Flanima finished next to W orth and Duval. Lady Navarre ran second to Sir Huon in 1900, but no other filly ever came that near winning Kentuckys chief race. Next she won from Leochares at a mile on a muddy track and then was re-iten five times before again winning. In these she ran second to Cangh Hill at three-quarters in 113 third to Rudolfo and Yankee Notions at a mile and an eighth in 1:51 and surprised everybody by runnlii- a bad third lo Cream and Floral Park in the Kentucky Oaks, for which she was a hot favorite at 4 to rf T..e track was bad and she was trying to concede weight to the other two and simplv could not do it that .nay. then site was unplaced to Rudolfo. Ten Point and Any Port in the rich Kentucky Handicap but look the 5200 allowed the fourth horse and was close up at the finish. Ten Point then gave her ten pounds anil lieat her by a neck at a mile and a sixteenth in 1:44. Then she was taken to Latonia where she was more fortunate than she had been at the two Louisville tracks. Her first start there was 011. the first day of the meeting in the Inaugural Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth. In tills she carried 104 pounds, while Irish Gentleman had 100, Princess Callaway 104. Coy Lad 100. Cream 95. Fora F!na 100 and Round the World 10S. Going into the lead on the last turn she drew away to win by six lengths in 1:45 and then gave a shock to owners of some intended Latonia Derby candidates by working out the Derby distance of a mile and a half in 2:33. Irish Gentleman was second and Princess Callaway third. This race was run June 9 and the Latonia Derby came on for decision Saturdav June 14. A month previously it had appeared that tills event was destined to lie contested bv a big field of crack three-year-olds, but mischances of one sort- and another affected this appealing prospect until finally only Gowell. Great. Britain and Foundation went to the post, the two colts carrying 122 pounds to her 117. Great Britain made the pace anil made it fast for nearly a mile, but she then passed him in a ii.fy and almost duplicated her public trial when she won away off by herself in 2:33. Great Britain was ten lengths behind her and Foundation was a sixteenth of a mile away. This was the erownin" achievement of her career and one of great excellence indeed. After that she won but one more race a purse at the Lexington fall meeting, in which she defeated Kieburne, Flying Tom, U Steppa and The Grader at a mic and a sixteenth in 1:40 over a good but not fast track. She ran some grand races in which he was beaten, but it was by the best horses in training in the west and she was alwavs fighting out the finishes in her characteristic, resolute fashion. Gowell should race with further distinction in the important handicaps of 1914. Her record and pedigree are: Year. Age. Sis. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Unp.
