RINGEING WINS A STAKE BEVERWYCK STABLE ENTRY FINISHES FIRST AND SECOND IN CHARLESTON FEATURE. Three-Year-Old Filly Gets Up to Beat Her Stable Companion, the Veteran Sir John Johnson, in Last Stride of Well-Contested Race. Charleston, S. C December 25. The Bcvcrwyck Stable scored a decisive triumph in the ,010 Christmas Handicap, one mile, which featured todays card at Palmetto Park when Ringling and Sir John Johnson took first and second niouev. Dart-worth was third. The race was brilliantly "contested all the way and began with a perfect start that caused a prolonged outburst of applause from the big concourse of spectators. Sir John Johnson, though carrying top weight, essayed the pacemakiug task and accomplished his work so thoroughly that he had his early followers in distress when the stretch turn was reached. Ringling, on which Mi-Taggart had waiting instructions, cut loose when fully straightened out for the final drive and. responding in game fashion, slipped up to beat her stable companion in the last stride. Wilhite was backed into favoritism in the race, but he showed poorly in the running owing to the interference lie suffered. Rain that fell steadily until after the first race was responsible for diminishing what probably would have been the best attendance that has witnessed the racing this season. The sun shone brightly after the opening dash and many laggards came to the course who otherwise would have remained away. Thirteen layers attended to the speculative wants of the public and they again suffered severe loss, as every one of the winners came in for staunch support. The only real respite from loss the layers hail today came in the opener, when Camellia scurried home In front. The L. II. Adair establishment scored a double during the afternoon when Gov and Samuel R. Meyer won their respective purses. Both revelled ;in the sloppy going. J. O. Talbot also won two purses with Frank Hudson and Kin-mundy, both of which were favorites. Frederick Johnson has reserved stalls for half a dozen of C. K. G. Billings two-year-olds, which will be shipped to Palmetto Tark from Sheepshead Bay in a few days. Frank E. Brown hai disposed of the Ben Strome mare Chemulpo to J. L. Holland, who will send her to his farm in Oklahoma, where she will be mated with the Voter stallion Hilarious. Agnur threw his stifle out during the running of the first race, which accounted for his poor showing. Kinniundy. winner of the sixtli race, was bid up 05 over his entered price of 00 bv A. C. Bellew, his former owner. The horse was retained by J O. Talbott. The ofiicials and newspaper men were guests of tho association at a dinner this afternoon. Gathered around the festive board were about thirty, and the track caterer served a sumptuous repast. There was little training at Palmetto Park this morning. Few horses were on the track. The fact that it was raining hard and also that the going was deep was responsible for trainers going along slowly with their racers. Among the most notable work-outs were: Armor Three-quarters in 1:21. Barn Dance Three-quarters in 1:23. Ben Prior Five-eighths in 1:00. Bertis Five-eighths in 1:00. Caller Ou Three-quarters in 1:22.
