ROUGH RIDING MASS RACES MUCH INTERFERENCE ATTENDS RUNNING OF DAYS FEATURES AT CHARLESTON. Biggest Crowd of the Season in Attendance and Layers Partially Recoup Previous Losses Winning Witch Is Returned Winner of Static. Charleston, S. C, January 10. A midsummer brand of racing was furnished patrons of the sport at Palmetto Park this afternoon. Conditions were ideal and the attendance was the largest of the season. The weather was not unlike a day in June, the track in good shape and the contests spirited from start to lmish. Except in the last race, no winner had more than a necks margin over the? contender. Retting action in the ring was of good volume and the fourteen layers reaped a harvest because of the frequent failure of the hest backed conl enders. The Isle of Palms Selling Stakes, one mile, was the feature of the program and was won by Winning Witch. She got up in the last stride to score over Pardner, with Dangerous March and Rob R. follow ing closely. Winning Witch suffered considerably from frequent interference, and so did most of the others, particularly Rob R., which would have been a factor with a clear course. Dartworth was another that suffered severely by me rough riding that marked the race. The victory of Winning Witch did not prolit the Weber Jc Ward confederacy to any extent so far as the purse money was concerned, for she was bid up from an entered price of 1,000 to ,903 and bought in. The handicap at one mile and a sixteenth preceding the stake" event was also marred by considerable rough riding. Donald Macdonald, Republican and John Furlong were the ones that suffered most. Lochiel. which in recent starts has been finishing far back, ran in greatly improved fashion today and, after following Joe Deibold closely, disposed of him In the last seventy ycards to win -by a head, with John Furloni; third. After Skeets victorv he was bid up from ?30a to ?00O and bought by W. C. Weant. Ralph Lloyd started out to make a runaway race of the fifth, but after assuming a ten-lengths lead at the half, began to tire and was linally beaten a head by Golden Treasure. Polly II., the favorite, after a stormy trip, managed to land third. The closing dasli went to Earl of Savoy over Jabot, the favorite. The winner was entered for 1914.sh00 and "was bid un to 00 and bought by J. O. Talhott. W. G. Yanke. George North and William Fitz-niauiice were additions today to the ranks of the layers. The ring made an extensive clean-up and recouped much of its previous losses. Rookmaker William Reverley is mourning the loss of ,100 that some bold thief managed to get away with this morning. Frank Gering bought Flying Yankee from K. F. Carman today. Frank Prior was an arrival today from Texas with a string of horses belonging to Lay and Iligglnbotham. John Greenwood, owner of Tiktok and Ta Nun Da. arrived from Toronto today and will remain for the rest of the meeting. A. Zimmer sold the three-year-olds May Weasmer and Lagrange to J. W. lledrick today. T. J. Elward, who has the colt Astrologer at Palmetto Park, arrived from Toronto this morning. The track showed more firmness this morning than at any former time this season and some creditable work-outs resulted, including the following: Ardelon Half mile in 52.
