DEFINING A HORSES BREEDER. The question as to who is the actual breeder of a horse has arisen in Australia over the Avondalo Stakes, which Castalia secured, and among the conditions of which it is provided that 125 sovereigns should go to the breeder of the winner. It is interesting to note that the Avondale Jockey Club ruled, after a prolonged discussion, that "the breeder of Castalia be defined as the owner who selects or chooses the sire to mate with the mare." In the case of the late Sir Tattou Sykes and Spearmint, to take only one example, he gets the credit of breeding that Derby winner, and not Sir James Duke, who was really responsible for the horse, having sent Maid of the Mint to Carbine. However, the Australian Jockey Club does not endorse this view, and according to the Sydney Referee, the matter is almost sure to be referred to the Xew Zealand Conference, and it will be interesting to see what view that authority adopts London Sportsman.
