ENTRIES TO GREAT ENGLISH RACES. Entries to a number of highly important English races were made public January S, the events being the Lincolnshire Handicap and Ratthyany Plate at Lincoln, Liverpool Spring Cup at Liverpool, Newbury Spring Cup at Newbury, Doveridge Handicap at Derby, Nottingham Soring Handicap at Nottingham, Queens Prize at Kempton Park. Great Metropolitan Handicap, Great Surrey Handicap and City and Suburban Handicap at Epsom; Usher Cup t Sundown Park, Vi.ctoria Cup at Hurst Park. Great Jubilee Handicap at Kempton Park, Coronation Cup at Upsmn, and the Gold Cup and Alexandra Plate at Ascot. All of these except the last three named are handicaps and necessarily any expression of opinion as to their m-obable outcome must await the publication of tho weights assigned the various candidates. In one and another of these races American-bred horses are nominated, but they are mostly in English ownership. A few years back the II. P. Whitney horses were lavishly entered in these big events of t lie spring and early summer campaign, but costly experience has evidently bred caution, as Whitney nominations are comparatively sparse this year, being confined to Panasine in Die Ratthyany Plate ami Great Surrey Handicap, and Ilarmonicou in the Victoria Cup. Of other American horses the names of Cheerful. Sir Martin. Outram and High Rock appear in the Lincolnshire; Forward anil Niblick in the Ratthyany : Dalmatian in the Liverpool Spring Cup: Cheerful, Sir Martin, Sands of Time and High Rock in the Newbury Spring Cup; Matelot and High Rock in the Doveridge Handicap; Toiler and Stung .gain in the Nottingham Spring Handicap: Dalmatian in the Queens Prize; Dalmatian. October and Stung Again in the Great Metropolitan; Sir Martin, Castleton. Forward, Coronis and Westphalia in tlie Great Surrey: Sir Martin, Sands of Time and Tinklebell in the City and Suburban; Sir Martin, Outram. Castleton and High Rock in the Victoria Cup; Sir Martin. Sands of Time and Tinklebell in the Great Jubilee, and Rock Flint in tho Coronation Cun and Ascot Gold Cup. The nomination of Rock Flint to such high-class races as the Coronation Cup and Ascot Gold Cup comes as a surprise because it was recently announced that he was to lie sent into the stud this spring, being so rheumatic that he could not be trained. Perhaps he has shown indications of recovery recently. When a two-year-old ho was one of the best in England. The more important handicaps, taken collectively, show an increase in entries over the figures of last year, the comparative showing being: Stake. 1918. 1911. Lincolnshire Handicap 51 44 Liverpool Cup 2. 82 Jubilee Handicap 55 49 Queens Prize 8t 49 City and Suburban 44 -19 Great Metropolitan 58 5S Total 201 2.S1 The Lincolnshire and Great Jubilee Handicaps show a falling on", hut the others all have more than compensating gains., it being quite surprising to find the two miles and a quarter Great Metropolitan given more entries than the lesser distance events.
