MORE RAIN AT CHARLESTON PATRONAGE OF SPORT AT PALMETTO PARK SUFFERS SLUMP IN CONSEQUENCE. Layers Continue to Operate at a Loss at South Carolina Track and Their Number Shrinks to Nine Racing Marked by Close Finishes. Cia rleijlon, S. C, February 10. Disagreeable wcalher detracted from the raving at Palmetto Park this afternoon and caused a falling off in attendance. Keeent heavy losses depleted the ranks of the layers, and only nine operated today, which, is the smallest number of the meeting. Hie program, though an ordinary one, at times furnished some good sport, 1 1if finishes being close and exciting. The fourth ace, a dash of one mile and twenty yards, resulted in a rousing iinish, with the tirst four strung across the tracks heads apart. Billie Baker, the winner, was much the best, but suffered from weak handling and was on the extreme outside at the liuish. Another hard fought contest was that in the lifth, when Roger Gordon and Kiva fought it out stride for stride most of the way and finished heads apart, linger Gordon was the best supported favorite of the day and his success was attended by vast losses to the layers. Under capable handling, Willis, which finished third, would have returned the winner. The half-mile track contingent, which is well represented here, put over a good one in llarcourt, backed from 20 to 1 to 12 to J in the opener. In some of his recent attempts, llarcourt has lieen badly deficient in speed. lie was altogether a different horse today and a sharp contender f fi in the start. iariiureler, at odds-on, was an easy winner in til-1 second, but Gladys Y. might have led him home but for the weak handling J. Mclntyre gave her, as a result of being taken suddenly ill duriug the running. He was forced to cancel his riding engagements later because of a fainting spell on lemming to the jockey room. Turner was substituted for Mclntyre on Dr. Dougherty and gave that horse a gilt-edged ride that landed him a winner over Tom Hancock, the favorite. .lockey 0. Knight, who had the mount on llarcourt, made it a double for the afternoon when he 111 ought Huisseau home a winner in the liual dash, for which Dr. Jackson was an overwhelming favorite iind bandy staggered in third. The Stewards "announced after the last race this "afternoon the restoration to all privileges of jockey C. Borel. who was suspended some time ago for au unsatisfactory ride on Oakland. Borel will resume riding tomorrow and have the mount on Old Ren in the Spartanburg Handicap. Will Hall, who operated earlier in the season at .luarez, was among todays arrivals and announced ids intention of joining the ranks of the layers operating here. Another layer who arrived this morning and who intends to quote prices is Fred t ook, who lias been absent from the track for some time and is now ready to return to his former vocation. Cook lias lately put in most of his time on his farm near St. Louis. .Most of the members of both branches of the South Carolina legislature, including Governor lSIense. ate expected to be visitors at the track tomorrow when guests of Charleston. The lawmakers will come by special train from Columbia. II. G. Bedwell today purchased Mycenae from W. 11. Frey. This is the fourth time that Mycenae has been returned to the Redwell establishment.
