A FRENCH TURFMANS ACTIVITIES. The French government has recognized the services of M. Ldnioml l.lanc. who paid 87,500 lor Flying Fox. by conferring on him the Ijegion of Honor. M. Blauc has plaved a most important part in the history of the French turf since Mubienne as far back as 1S7! won him the lirst of his seven victories in the Grand Prix. He holds the record in respect ro the number of wins and in 1903 ran lirst, second and third. Following his usual custom he sent Vini-cius third in the Grand Prix to fulfill his engagement in the Epsom Derby, where he took second place behind ltock Sand. M. Edmond Blanc commissioned M. de St. Albin." when he bought up all the sporting palmers published in Paris and merged them in "Le Jockev." to visit Newmarket and re-iKirt fullv ou the different charities and benevolent institutions organized at the headquarters of raci::g in England, and became the founder of the "Jockey s Hospital," using his personal interest to obtain a grant towards the building from the government on: of the funds supposed to be applied for charitable puriwses." He failed, however, as regards an endowment. All the resources of the French goveru-ments rake-off from the pari-mutuels were, some said, required to maintain the prestige of Marianne," as the svstem is called, and M.
