NOTES OF THE TURF. .Major J. T. MeBride, vice-president of the Dorval 1 ark Jockey Club, has departed from .Montreal on an extended European trip, and while abroad lie will endeavor to interest some English owners in racing iu Canada and particularly In the province of Quebec. Garnett Ferguson, son of the late starter James I. I erguson, has arrived at Lexington from California with the idea of buying a few good tborouglibr.-ls witii which to return to racing as an owner. He raced Bearcatcher. Military Man, The Mighty :uul other good horses in California, but retired from the sport some half dozen years ago to go into business in Sau Francisco. Mr. A. C. Pratt, member for South Norfolk, has introduced in the Ontario legislature a bill for Jli-regulation of racing in Ontario. The bill has ii..t been printed yet, but it is understood to be 011 tin-lines of the commission bill which Mr. Pratt introduced last session, and which was later withdrawn. Enforced substitution of the pari-mutiiels for book-making and prohibition of the employment or any but Canadians as officials are among the provisions. Horsemen arriving at Louisville from Juarez have been much Impressed with the manner in which Old Rosebud has developed since tliev saw him in Kentucky last season. His girtli Is unusually great for a horse of Ids conformation, and lie displays quality now which was not discernible when he was racing last season as a two-year-old. After tilling his Kentucky Derby engagement he probablv will be raced in the Kentucky Handicap, set to be run at Douglas Park Saturday. May 23. and later in tht; La tenia and Dorval Derbys. Most clubs in the country districts are favorable to the legalization of the totalisator, and. to com nearer home. I notice that at the annual genetal meeting of the Newcastle .lockey Club the chairm.Mi. J. OMara, stated that he would welcome the in stall.it ion of the machine. It is reasonable to sup pose he voiced the feelings of a majority of the mem hers, but it would be interesting to know whether he had any thing solid to base his idea that a trial f machine betting on this states courses was within reasonable distance. It is undeniable that a large section of metropolitan race goers want the ma chine even if the bookmakers are also retained but. as in the past, the chances are the miuoritv will find means of successfully uprising the wishes of the majority.
