LITTLE EITHER A WINNER ; W. W. DARDENS HORSE SHOWS RETURN TO GOOD FORM AT LATONIA. Takes Early Lead in Three-Quarter Mile Dash and i and Holds Advantage to End of East Run Race Four Favorites Are Beaten. Cincinnati. O., October 21. Four favorites were beaten this afternoon at Latonia and their defeats cost the talent a pretty penny. The well balanced card accounted for an immense volmnei of speculation, the total going well over 00,000. lueal racing conditions prevailed and the sport was leu tilted by close finishes. The attendance was almost of opening day proportion, umny lirst time visitors being among the throng. The outstanding Mirprlse of the afternoon developed in the closing dash when First Degree won out with consummate ease. After his victory, Walter II. Pearce, who bid Expectation up yesterday, raised First Degree from 00 to 00. hue the horse was retained witu the customary advance of .. The six furlong sprint that engaged several crack short distance racers, was the afternoons best offering and it resulted in an easy victory for Little Father, which seemingly has returned to his best form. The Darden representative showed high speed from the start and led practically all the way. Floral Park was his closest attendant at the end, with Morristown next. Presumption was the favored one in the race, hut retired after going half a mile. .lester ami Cannonade were regarded as the ones most likely to win the opener, which engaged a dozen maidens, but both failed badly, the purse going to .Mrs. J. S. Overmans Bamboo, which Just managed to outstay Dundreary and Osinonde. In tile second Suregot and Thesieres. were almost equal choices. The latter won handily, while Sureget showed decidedly ioor farm and was never a serious factor. Miss Fielder was the other public choice to score. She took the third race rather handily from Sunset and Tory Maid. Pan Maid, a strong second choice in the race, was given a poor ride by McCalic, who piloted her all over the track in the stretch racing, y, Iieuluh"S;, showing decided improvement, led all J the way in the fifth race and beat Mary Ann K., M Willi the favorite, Copiiertown, third. The winner enjoyed an advantage at the start by being clear of interference, whereas the others were in a bad tangle. General Manager John Ilachmcister is desirous of bringing together some of the better class of juveniles at a mile and has announced that he will add ,000 to a race of this kind. Jockey Carroll Shilling has been advised by Algernon Daingertield, secretary of the Jockey Club, to he in attendance at the next meeting of the Jockey Club members, as his application for reinstatement would then be acted won. In the event that Shilling is restored to good standing, it is his Intention to go to Juarez to ride. T. C. Campbell, manager of the Tnlane and Crescent theatres in New Orleans, and a prime leader iu the movement to restore racing in the Crescent City, telegraphed here today that there would lie a forly-day race meeting over the fair grounds track, beginning January 1. The purses will be for hB100 and the money will be tint iu a bank to guarantee the purses. The New York system of wagering will be tried out and the business men and olliciais are interested in the success of the meeting. Joseph A. Murphy has been secured as presiding judge. A. 15. Dade as starter, and Joseph McLenuon as secretary. Tiie stewards this afternoon continued their Investigation of the ride of Goose on Hank ODay when that horse made such a poor showing at Churchill Downs and interrogated at length trainer J. S. Hawkins and Grover C. linker. Jockey Goose will he given a hearing tomorrow, when it Is expected that the investigation will be concluded. Joseph A. Murphy, who will servo as presiding judge at New Orleans during the meeting beginning there January 1, telegraphed to J. 11. Campbell this afternoon requesting information if Ills services would lie available after January 1. Edward Trotter will ship all his horses at the close of Latonia racing to Charleston. Frank J. Bruen received today several requests for stall room at Palmetto Park. Secretary Maginn this afternoon announced the Weights for the Fort Thomas Handicap for two-year-olds, six furlongs, 92,000 added, to be run next Saturday.
