TIMELY GOSSIP PROM KENTUCKY. Cincinnati. O., October 21. The superior showing made by Chalmers last Monday, when for the second time he defeated Ed Crump, with the latter conceding him seven pounds, will doubtless make the Hawkins colt favorite for the Fort Thomas Handicap, the big feature race of Saturday at Latonia. It is well known among trainers that Hawkins was badly disapioiiited when Ed Crump beat Chalmers at Douglas Park. In his next start he had a pull in the weights of eleven pounds over the Schorr colt and made a runaway race of it just as he did at Latonia Monday. In the Fort Thomas Handicap the two probably will meet at even weights or thereabouts. If Chalmers wius he will undoubtedly be one of the leading favorites during the winter for the big Derby races of next year. . 15. F. Guthrie has decided to dispose of his horses in training, including the two-year-olds. Royal Interest and St. Leo, together with all nis vearlings. and will take a rest the coming season. He does not intend to quit the turf, but will come back after a years absence with the weanlings he now owns, which are a promisiug lot. He offered several of his yearlings at the recent Lexington sale, but did not let them go for the reason that the prices bid for them were not up to what he had been offered privately. George Morgan and his partner, who have engaged Al Luzader to traiu their horses, arc now here and their horse, Delaney, will be here the last of the week to join the ten yearlings that Luzader purchased for Morgan and Co. at the Lexington sales. They expect to buy several more yearlings at the sale here next week and perhaps pick up one or two older horses so as to have a full carload- to send to Juarez on the special traiu which leaves here on the Monday following the closing of the Latonia meeting. Delaney has had a long rest and is expected to do some good racing at Juarez the coming winter. Luzader thinks he has several good ones among the yearlings he purchased for this firm at Lexington last month. K. J. Baxter of the Windsor Jockey Club, who Is here at present. Avill shortly leave for Laurel witn other Windsor track officials to look over the pari-mutuel administration building. It is the intention of the luamigement of this Canadian track in introducing the mutuel system of betting next season, to model their building so as to combine all the best features in use nt Douglas Park. Churchill Downs, Latonia and Laurel. This association has outlined plans to have the building devoted to this purpose and the betting ring connected therewith the equal of any in America. The improvements i they have in view will be carried to completion long before the opening date of their first sum- i mor meeting in 1015. I J. T. Weaver lias lieeu asked by several prominent breeders recently to put a price on his great lilly, Gowell. winner of the Latonia Derby last season. He has priced the daughter of Ort Wells at ,000, with the proviso that she is to remain in his eharge until he decides to retire her to the stud. Kay Spcnce says that Hodge, which was jumped on in a race at Louisville last week aud which occurrence prevented him from filliug his engagement in the Latonia Autumn Inaugural Handicap, is coming around nicely and he hopes to be able t race him a time or two before the present meeting is over. He is satisfied that the injury is not serious, though the gelding had a narrow escape. Last season Speuce had nothing but good luck with this good racer, but it has been just the reverse this year. Hodge is unquestionably a high class three-year-old when at his best.
