ORIGIN OF THE WORD "STALLION." Mares and entire hordes once ran together In England 011 the common lands aiid created so. much confusion that a law was passed ordering males to "be kept in bounds and tied In stalls, whence the name of stallion or stalled one was a -lied to the entire horse." Then came emasculation. Henry VIII. had a law passed that 110 stallion less than 15 hands high and no mare less than 13 hands should run wild iu the country. One of the great objects in view was a horse adapted to cavalry -mriMises. Stoutly built, small horses were preferred to- tall leggy ones because thev better stood the wear and tear or a campaign. In times of stress the exportation of horses was prohibited. The good specimens were kept at home for repraUv9 pwrpce?f
